Just thought I would say hello an introduce myself. Freddy from Scarborough. Signed up to this site yesterday and had so much useful info already. I should probably introduce my degu's as I'll mostly be talking abuot them. Harry and Finn, both male, both 12 months old. Noisy buggers that chew bang and squeak all night keeping me awake, but cute never the less.
They live in a home made cage 4ft high 3ft wide in 2ft deep with 3 levels.
I've already met smux and degus123 who have both been very helpful to me. Wish I'd found this site sooner as I've had my degus 6 months but they're both happy little fellows.
I'll hopefully be an active member of this forum and help out where I can but usually asking more than answering.

It's odd, the only time my degus make a sound is when they talk to each other, like little 'popping bubbles' sound as I call it. and on their wheel! Anyway welcome! I hope you have a good time with us

Hi cherpi. Well my degus's house in the cage is from pets at home its made from wood (safe for degu's ofcourse) shaped like a house with doors and windows. On a night I refill there food bowls and they find this a fantastic time to eat there house. One side is completely gone so I've moved it so the back wall compensates for the missing side. If one degu is eating the house the other will gnawing at the door bars. They have there food, timothy hay, usually some vegetation and a mineral block. They have no reason to be doing this, and they only do it when I'm trying to sleep.
Thrown into this noise is there chirping (as I call it) and usually a rapidly banging foot. Sleeping isn't an easy task for me. lol.
Is this strange for anyone else to hear? Is it worth starting a topic asking for tips to keep them quiet?

Sounds like the norm lol, my pair have also destroyed one side of their nest, had to order a new one today. Though to be fair mine are quiet at night.

Hi Fredundant, welcome to the forum!! I think your user name is great! A suggestion for your night time maniacs . . . try feeding them in the morning instead of at night, and that will give them all day to work off their calories and energy . . . likewise, don't give them treats high in fat at night either. A suggestion that Smux often makes is to turn your room lights down a great deal at least 30 minutes before you wish to go to sleep. This will clue them in to the fact that it is time to settle in for the night. Since your degus have a long standing practice of night time crazies, you won't like see any changes initially, but if you stick to it for a while, you should at least see improvements.

I fed mine in the morning, so could explain why mine chew things/makes a noise in the day but are quiet at night. So I suggest you follow deguconvert's idea.

Same for us, we feed them at 7am before work and when we get home their nice a chilled just in time for me to wake them up and let them run about outside the cage! Good advice.
Welcome by the way! Myself and Arro are all the way in sunny Hull so not too far :-)

Well greetings to Sunny Hull from Sunny Scarborough.
Thanks everyone for your advice. As for giving my degu's treats I seldom feed them anything sweet. The only sweetness I give them is a thin slice of apple each but not so often.
Thanks to everyone for the advice. The main treat I give them is pea flakes as they seem to love them and carrot. Is this right? Should I be adding these into there regular diet and introducing sweet things more often as a treat? I'm just worried about them getting diabetes.

No . . . don't add them more often. If you are looking for alternative treats to offer to them, look in the Feeding and Treats board. There is a stickied thread there that offers a number of treats that are safe (used in moderation of course) and will give you several different things you can offer to augment their diet.
