I am in the process of gathering everything for when I get my degus next month. On the Exotic Nutrition website, I saw something called a Bolt-On Manzanitta Branch 15"-20" Does anybody know what it is or what it is made of? here's the link: www.exoticnutrition.com/Cage-Accessories.htm

it is a type of wood, usually the type of branches you see offered are in the bird section of pet stores. email the company selling the wood and ask them to send you full description of what the wood is exactly--this way you will know if you want it for the degus. i would think though that if it is safe for birds to gnaw on then it couldn't hurt our little furry friends, but ask anyway--never hurts to be too careful!

I emailed the company and this is what they said:
"Manzanitta is the type of wood. Comes from the desert. Safe for pets."

Well, that is a little vague. They probably don't know either. I buy bird toys for ours. I have read that they are safe. I got one with wooden blocks and a bell on the end to hang down from the top of the cage. The babies like to ring the bell more than chew on the wood. I saw that on their web site when I ordered food last. It may be a good time to get that while they are small. Later, they may be a little heavy for it, but I think I would get it. They would love climbing on it! ;D They will be able to use it for quite a while, depending on how fast they chew through it! It also depends on how many like this enough to not want to give it up. You would then have all of them on it a one time! ;D I have the sleep- n- ledge and it's used all the time. If the branch, which is MUCH nicer looking, starts sagging from weight, that's also a great product. It is so simple, one could easily be made, but my hubby just said to get it because it's pretty inexpensive. Laurie

I was just looking at the coconut den! I love that! Sarah has a pic posted of a coconut she got. I don't know where she got her's, but I like it! You're going to have busy, happy little guys!

You mentioned a coconut den - can you buy a coconut and somehow take out the meat?
