i went through the previous posts and couldn't find an answer--is it safe to use glass cleaner on the tank? i usually just wet a sponge and put a little dishwashing liquid (i figure if it is safe on dishes we eat off of) and then scrub with that and then rinse with a paper towel and then dry thoroughly. this seems to work, i just was wondering if there are some other alternatives, particularly in removing the pee stains down the walls. my husband insists that glass cleaner is fine--i am afraid to use anything that might have harmful fumes. we don't have access to an outside hose, so taking it out of doors and hosing is not possible and the tank is too heavy to drag in and out of the bathtub. thanks for any tips.

Dont worry about not finding another post on this, in fact I am not sure if its been brought up for quite a long time!
I tend to use antibacterial surface wipes, such as Cif (not sure if you have that in America) its designed to be safe on work surfaces for humans, and has relatively little moisture content and so dries quickly.
You DO need to avoid using anything with fumes certainly, and anything that advises on the bottom that it is dangerous if swallowed.
my method certainly works well with removing pee stains, so give it a go!
good luck

You could always use vinegar - it is totally harmless to animals but cleans glass brilliantly. Not to mention it also has anti-bacterial properties. It's what I used to use in my jirds' tank.

Hanlou you are ingenious! Perfect item, very easy to get hold of, cheap and eddible!
And totally off topic I know, but did you mention you have Jirds before? I used to have some before I moved onto Degus!

Yes Hanlou, I use white vinegar to clean the glass base on our Degu Condo. Does a good job. Removes pee etc in just one wipe. Oddly enough I've noticed Degu pee foams when you spray white vinegar on it. A reaction similar to spraying vinegar on baking soda so I would guess it is a reaction between the acidic vinegar and Degu pee which must be base.

I had two Shaw's jirds that have since passed on, but I am 'jird sitting' for my sisters' two jirds atm, it's nice to have them here. Even if they are digging out most of their cardboard bedding.......
They are in a cage as it was easier than transporting a glass tank, they love the space but are a bit messy, lol.
white vinegar is great for cleaning, ask Kim and Aggie..... ;-)

ok, i cleaned the tank today and used the vinegar--i warmed it up slightly, dipped in a sponge and 8-)WOW!!! cleaned the tank lickety-split and no odor left when done! and no soap to dilute and rinse off, just a quick wipe with a paper towel and voila, clean and odor free!! thank you so much, this is so great and i don't have to worry about what they might inhale or ingest ;D think i might put the vinegar in an empty spray bottle and then i won't even need the sponge, just spray and wipe
