somehow t'other day i got the idea of making a mesh cube and planting grass in so as it grows out of the mesh the degus can eat it, but they cant hurt thr roots... Anyone know what kinda grass, herbs or plants are good for goos to eat? i know mine love a rose petal now and again

Timothy hay does indeed come from timothy grass, and there are quite a number of different grasses you could try as I'm sure you have realised...main ones I would go for is probably timothy grass and some normal hay and also perhaps some non-grass stuff like certain herbs or wheat (if you're lucky, the wheat will actually grow :-P) or perhaps even strawberry (which is safe as they're likely to eat it before any strawberries actually grow from it).
You could also make another mesh cube to go on top of this (5 sided cube, slots over the other cube) to protect the growth until it's ready then let them get at it, or you could grow it outside of the cage so you could put in a new one every week.
