I can't find anything that indicates that either the chestnuts or the pomegranates are safe for degus to consume. I would leave those alone, I think.

thanks deguconvert..
i also looked over the net yesterday and like yourself, couldnt find any information about degus eating either pomegranates or chestnuts, i did however read that rabbits should never eat pomegranates as they are a citrus fruit (which i didnt know). so, i shant be trying these out, nor the chestnuts, better safe than sorry! i just thought they might like the pomegranate seeds?........obviously a big NO, NO...so i shall steer away.
but they are aloud pumpkin seeds, right??? with Halloween on our door step i was kinda excited about trying something new, if they are aloud, do you dry them first or give them fresh?...lol

Yes they are, and most degus go crazy for them. (Pumpkin seeds that is, lol) I would dry them first I think, or shell them.

Chesnuts are mostly starch, so I'd say not safe for an animal prone to diabetes. They apparently don't have much food value other than the calories in the starch anyway - no good vitamins or minerals.
Pumkin seeds? Mine love them. Leave them in their shells so the goos have to do some chewing; I feed from fresh but if you lay them out on a tray in a very dry / warm place to dry out they'll keep better. High in fat so not too many.

"Leave them in their shells" Either my degus are eating the shells or I'm missing something =S Did a pumpkin saturday night - Jack Skellington!!! - and gave the goos a seed each while doing it (after cleaning them off a bit) and they just munched the whole thing =S Didn't know they had shells! They have to split the sunflower seed shells for the seed though, is that what you meant?

I think the shell parts are eatable, and I have eaten them whole when roasted myself, so I don't think it is bad for the degus. Having said that, I'm not without doubt. LOL! I think you give them in or out of shell, whatever you feel most confident in. I always give sunflower seeds in shell, and really wouldn't feel too worried about giving pumpkin seeds in shell either. There just happens to be a health food store not far from me that sells raw, shelled pumpkin seeds, so that is what I buy for them. LOL!
