Haha cute! Don't think mine like tomato. They like celery leaves, cheese.. can't remember what else but if I give them food when they are out of the cage they take it and run - they obviously want to only eat in their cage.. I wouldn't take food off them lol

Haha cute! Don't think mine like tomato. They like celery leaves, cheese... Cheese ? I would suggest you stop feeding cheese and other dairy products to your degus. They may not be able to properly digest the cheese and this can harm the degu digestive system. Cheese would also contain a level of protein the degus are not used to ingesting. As for tomatoes...you should try cherry tomatoes. Most degus will readily accept them.

It would be nice if mine ate cherry tomatoes! Or any veg for that matter. They just ignore it. Glad they eat some of their herbs though

Ooh, I have a whole plant full of cherry tomatoes in the garden - I'll try them! Do you just give them a small piece once a week or is this a treat they could have more regularly?
I know nuts are something that should be fed sparingly as they are fattening, but I'm a little lost of how often all the other treats should/can be given!! Dried treats/veg/leaves/plants I get the impression can be daily, along with oats, cereals etc. But the fresh ones I'm not so sure about!

Humph, mine also ignore tomatoes! Fussy little things! coronasol - Check out some of the stickies in this section about feed quantities. As a general rule, items high in oils and proteins to be fed sparingly i.e. your nuts, and some seeds like sunflower. Don't rule them out, just be aware of the quantities. Dried plants can be in abundance, again some you have to be a bit careful. For example alfalfa is high in protein. Fresh veg is kinda up to the degu. You can feed them some fresh veg every day but keep an eye out for loose stools as too much veg can cause this. It used to be recommended only once a week but we are discovering that you can feed them fresh stuff everyday in moderation (to small quantities). Also don't overdo the oats as they are high in carbs, which the excess is converted to sugars. The same with cereals, and grains from cereals.

Thanks Malteser, I'm slowly reading through all the posts on here and learning so much, there are some fantastic threads for us Degu newbies! Your comments are really helpful too, roll on Saturday when I can start to slowly find out what my boys do and don't like!

I don't give them a lot of cheese, literally the tiniest bit every now and again. Mine like peppers, Cleo will usually ignore it, then Daisy will pick it up to eat it so Cleo will then eat her bit even though she didn't want it at first!! Lol x
