I have two boy Degu's who are just under a year in age and one of them seems to be passing blood in his urine I believe.
I cleaned the cage yesterday morning and when I checked on them a few hours later there were small patches of urine, red in colour scattered around the cage. I am pretty sure it is urine as it doesn't seem to be a trail of blood from a cut.
I removed the covered saw dust in each place and replaced. I checked both and let them have 15 minutes of exercise in our back room. Both seemed okay.
Went in this morning and there is another patch of urine. Only one patch compared to the 4 from 10 hours ago.
What could it be? Just curious if anyone has had this before as it doesn't sound good.
I will see if there is more when I get in and if so I will have to separate them for a few hours to work out who it is.

Have they had anything with beetroot in to eat? This can change the colour of their unrine to look like blood? What colour is it drying?

No beetroot. Currently we only feed them Degu nuggets purchased from P@H and hay. They do have a Degu safe mix as a treat but not in the last 24 hours and I am sure it doesn't contain beetroot anyway.
It was a pale red but looked fresh this morning. I didn't remove it at the time so can answer the question when I get in as it would have dried.

There are some other plants that cause a reddish (different types of red) urine: hazelnut, branches of willow and apple trees, carrots, tomatoes, dandelion. Is it the first time you see this colour? Did you change the food recently?

Do you use the excel hay with dried dandelion in it from pets at home? this makes 2 of my boys urine go red, seems to be fairly random what turns the urine red for different degus in my experience. But maravilla is right, beetroot, carrot etc also turns urine red.
Degus have the ability to retain large amounts of water so thier urine is often very... potent for lack of a better word lol. I often find red, or a strong yellow.

Just normal hay which they have for their bed and a little put in their food bowls. They haven't had anything other than Degu nuggets recently.
I checked on them yesterday evening and got them out and they both still seem fine. They had a run and a little snooze in the girlfriends dressing gown. lol Didn't seem to be any more red patches so I will keep a close eye on this and hope it has passed!

a little snooze in the girlfriends dressing gown. Awe, I wish mine did this, they just seem to run off if we let them out! They are stil very young and exploring though I think. I'm sure the urine is fine, our two is sometimes red as well and I've not worried about it yet. Our rabbits used to be the same.
