Yes. If you touch where it's dry. His fur comes off. He's totally fine. Eating. Drinking. Pooing!!! He wants to come out and have cuddles ( although he's grounded until I know what's wrong as I dont want to speed it between the pets). Ive got vets at 4.30 today. So as Soon as I know I'll post to say. Just so it helps anyone else

been to the vets, and they think its mites :-( i have no idea how hes got them tho, ive only had him 3 weeks.
they have given me drops to put on him, and i have stripped his cage out, ditched all his toys that cant be cleaned and disinfected everything!!!
has anyone else had this or know if he will be ok? the vet seems to think he'll be fine as hes lively, eating, drinking etc.....

As you have had him on ly for three weeks, he could have had it from wherever you got him from Is he with other chins? As it iwll sprread otherwise, so he really should be quarantined, in a completely other room, and you need to wash hands etc before handling any others ! Hope he cheers up fast, it is treatable

Make sure he gets his dustbath every day. His fur will soon recover, dont worry about that

Hi there. I hope you don't mind me asking a question. I have a 13 week old chinchilla male. He's been totally fine up until last wednesday when I noticed his left eye looked dry after he had a sand bath. When I gave him a cuddle and looked closer I noticed his fur came out a little. I rushed him to the vets and they said it's mites. And have given me spot on. His skin doesn't look so dry now. But the fur is still falling out a bit. Not loads. But you can tell a bit is missing. I've read up about mites. And loads say it's itchy and the skin is red. Well niño is not itching. The dry skin is White.... He's eating normally. Drinking. Pooing! And normal poo. He's still wanting to come out and is active.
I've been googling all his symptoms and I'm stuck between mites and a fungal in fection. I've even changed the hay and bedding stuff.
Any ideas what it could be and if he'll be ok?
Thank you Natalie

Is this the same chin of your first post above? The vet said it's mites, did they give you anything for it? As it will need to be treated. He will be ok, but he needs treatment. Hope you have a knowledgable vet, as you will need a vet who is used to dealing with exotic animals, chinchillas are delicate. have you been to ChinsRUs? Lots of people on there who have a great amount of experience with chinnies and I am sure they will be able to give you great advice. website is www.chinsrus.co.uk/forums/May see you there
