Hi guys, I'm wanting to build my own chinchilla cage for two chins ( I don't have them yet i want to get set up first)
Does anyone have any tips on how to build a good cage, and what the best wood to use is? I'll be using a paul spooner litter tray for the base.
Regards Natalie x

Make it box shaped and no edges so they have no place to start chewing, add mesh front for doors and top for ventilation, have strong shelves. Good luck!

there is a thread on here, about cage building, i know its for goo's but should be fine for chins. Mist of us on here have goo's, i've got 8, which all live in shop bought cages. My trio, of boys, live in 2 thicket cages, from pets at homes, one attached ontop of the other, so they have access to both cages, took me about 20 mins, to cut the wire lol, but i am no good with carpentry xx

I built my cage late last year and it was easy enough - I have no experience but just made a plan and stuck to it.
I'd recommend MDF for the base/sides because its cheap and can be painted (if you wish to).
As Nicky said, there is a whole thread on here about building cages for goo's, the basic principles will be the same so it may be worth a look there?
Good luck and let us know how you get on!

Any chin cage should only be built using untreated pine and 3/4 gauge wire honey . To be honest my Oh and I have built cages in the past and when you have forked out for the wood, wire, c clips etc its cheaper to get John Hopewell to build you one

Hey Guys! Check out my new home made Chinchilla Mansion!!! My boyfriend is in to DIY and converted a spare triple wardrobe into a chinchilla house for my four princesses; Jasmine, Pocahontas, Ariel and Snow White ! Its got loads of fun platforms and a sleepy area which acts as a nest-box area. They love it !

Nice, I'm glad they like it I'm not sure how differently chins use space compared to degus, but is there a place with a longer length where they can stretch their legs up to a run? Also, I know chins are pretty good jumpers, but I would think about extending a couple of the shelves so they take up more or less the whole area to reduce the chance of them falling a long way and to maximise the running area. I'm sure you'll have the tools out again once you see how they like to use the space - we did anyway!

Yeah good point- they could maybe do with a longer shelf- they do love it though! the whole enclosed section is filed with nest boxes so they are spending the day in that section. I have degus also- they have just been moved into one of the former chinch cages- its huge- they don't know what to do with all the space!
