I got a chin yesterday, he is a 10 year old male, but he has dry flakey ears, he is happy anough in himself, but should I be worrying about the dry flakey ears ? well here he is ps. I know the cage is old and he will have a new one by the end of the month at the latest

Oh bless him how cute is he?
Regarding the ears I dont think its anything to majorly worry about unless it gets a lot worse, but it could be sore, So i would say to maybe dab his ears with a flannel thats been dipped in warm water and salt, just to keep them free from infection, and this will help keep them clean. If they are sore for him, then this will help soothe them for him.

OO a post I can help with.
We got our new chinchilla a while ago and his were really bad.
If you get some johnsons baby oil and put a tiny bit on your fingers (index and thumb) and gently rub his ears...a LOT of muck will come off. Just keep doing this once every couple of days. Make sure you do it AFTER a dust bath or it will stick to him. His coat may be a bit greasy afterwards but it will sort his ears out and it will go eventually. We also have a beige where his ears looked like they had little freckles on....but it was dirt lol.
You'll start to notice a difference in no time...it's nothing to worry about.

yeah, it's a bit fiddly at first because it takes a while to get the right amount on your fingers so the friction rubs the muck off. It's pretty minging lol, but it has to be done. Pabs has just got a little bit on his now. I'll try get some pics of his ears as the difference is hilarious! Chaco's are still really dry but getting a lot better. Done a lot of research before as his were a state when we got him.

Aww...was he a rescue? Is he your first? His ears defiantly need a good clean by your photographs =] You will be amazed at how different they will look and it will probably be more comfortable for him. If you have a look on deguworld.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=chinpic&action=display&thread=5607You will see pablos ears and what I ment by the 'freckles'. They are mostly gone now and there are just the tips to get now. I should have really took a photo of when we first got Chaco but I never. I would say they were as bad as your little man's, if not worse...but it's always hard to tell when your chin is a lighter colour lol. I don't know how they get like that =/ Keep us updated with pics =] It will be nice to see the stages for other people dealing with the same problem (which I should have done really!!!) ;] We were really worried but it turned out he was just a little mucky sod =] x

Hi Gem, we don't have many chin people on here these days, if you need more help you might like to try a forum like this one www.chinchillaworld.com/forums/You might find that you could improve his diet and this would improve his skin condition, something like linseeds might help his skin and coat.
