Here is a nice little article about Chinchilla diet: chinchillacymru.co.uk/feeding.htmI hope this helps you. It doesn't mention millet seed but it does give some good suggestions of Chin treats.

For treats we give both our degus and chinchillas shredded wheat. They LOVE it =]

@ xpsolo Millet seed/grains are good for both degus and chinchillas. Like other seeds, they supplement the diet and are beneficial when given in controlled amounts. As you already know degus are prone to diabetes and liver disease...so are chinchillas. Although Millet is acceptable, it contains some amount of fat and starch. Once ingested, starch is transformed into a form of sugar. Its fine as a treat, but monitor their intake of this closely. Millet seeds only contain small amounts of fat, but this can quickly lead to liver disease or other health problems if given in large amount regularly.
So the best advice I can give you, is to use caution. It is a good snack and I bet the degus love it, but dont over indulge. As for Chinchillas, they share the same dietary problems...so again, use caution.
Hope this helps...
@ iamline You are most likely already aware of this, but wheat is quite sweet. Its fine as the occasional snack, but just be careful not to give them large or regular amounts.

I disagree totally with the previous poster chins should not be given seeds they are far too high in fat and chinchillas are unable to metabolise fat which then causes fatty deposits on their liver.
Also mini shredded wheats have no sugar content and are fine for chins on a daily basis , they are used by experienced breeders/ pet owners and rescues alike and have been shown to be not harmful to chins whereas seeds are harmful
