Sphene has been having problems eating over the weekend, so emergency run to Judith this morning and a dental today.
Lump that we know about is OK, not red, doesn't look like its causing problems. Teeth fine.
But there was a tiny flap of gum tissue at the back of her mouth which looked like it was being bitten when chewing. It fell off when Judith touched it, and had a blood supply as it bled a tiny bit.
Back home now and feeling a little sorry for herself. Meds and baby food later, followed by a nice cosy heatpad.

Ouch, that sounds really unpleasant. She must have been chewing on it for a while if it was that loosely connected at this point. Must be such a relief to get it off now! Did they prescribe her any antibiotics, since it's a mouth wound? Really hoping that it heals quickly!

She's on meloxidyl anyway, so she has pain relief. No ABs as it was so loosely attached and came away easily.
She's looking a bit more active already, but I've confined her to one level as she's still a bit wobbly.

Wow, that's a good effort to find a new mouth problem, Sphene has ingenuity! Goodness knows what that's about. Hope she recovers well and it doesn't happen again!

She's looking better this morning, just very tired - she even fell asleep in her sand bath, lol.
She's interested in food, and is having tentative nibbles at stuff, so I've left her a selection in her cage (forage, baby food, CC and porridge oats mixed with a little water and dry porridge oats)
Had the quietest night for a long time, no splutters or mouth sucking so I think she's catching up on her sleep.
Still very worried about her though.

From what Judith said, it looked a bit like a quiff, but would have been getting caught between her teeth.

I had to have her PTS on Thursday, she'd rallied slightly on Tuesday following the op, so I think it made her a lot more comfortable. But she went into a steep decline on Wednesday, by Thursday she hadn't left her heatpad at all and was refusing food and water.
Judith, her vet, thought there may be an issue with her kidneys as she was craving warmth, and we decided it was kinder to let her go as there was nothing more we could do.

There is a little back story to this that I thought I should add.
On the previous Thursday, I found her in a semi collapsed state and raced her to the vet. She'd rallied significantly in the 30mins it took me to get her there, but she was limping heavily. We thought it may have been just an injury.
She was active most of the weekend, but was resting a lot due to her leg and I was assisted feeding as her interest in eating hard food was diminishing. She took the recovery food really well.
We both thought the main issue was her mouth as she was moving normally, but Judith did suspect that there may have been an underlying issue somewhere.
The surgery went well, and after the excess gum tissue was removed, she was getting more restful sleep with no spluttering or teeth sucking. I am so grateful that her last days were pain free and she was able to sleep peacefully. But she continued to decline, not moving, not taking recovery food or water, and by Thursday morning, not even moving to pee. So the decision was made to end her suffering.
She has left a hole so very huge in our little family, but she is back with her sisters who we lost at Christmas, and I take comfort in that.
Judith let me hold her at the end and she died while I was holding her.
Rest in peace my gorgeous girl, there's a degu pile just over the rainbow bridge with a place of honour for you.

Thanks for sharing the back story, the pieces fit together more now. As ever, you did everything you could, including giving her peaceful ending, it sounds like it was just her time. You've had a difficult 12 months, Savvy, sending hugs. I'm sure you know sphene is one of the sparkliest gemstones on the planet, I've always thought of your Sphene with that in mind.
