Welcome to the forum.
Degus are very vocal and do make lots of different sounds. Its their day to day behaviour that usually let's you know if there's something wrong.
Things to look out for are not eating, drinking, peeing or pooing, hiding in their nest when they're usually active, etc.
Degus are a steep learning curve, so please have a read through of the stickies at the top of each section and if you have any questions please ask. There are no silly questions when it comes to degus.

Welcome!
Degus make lots of noises but I can't really think of any that meaning anything terrible. They tend to not make any sound if they are in pain or mean to really hurt another degu.
They DO make a lot of sounds that mean they are annoyed to varying degrees and in different ways, but the best way to think about this is that they are just very good at communicating their feelings so everyone knows where they stand and bad feelings don't build up! Anything that sounds whiny or annoyed is usually just that and nothing at all to worry about.
If you can catch any sounds on video, we will happily watch/ listen for you, you would need to find a way to host the video (eg youtube) and then post a link to it here.

Don't worry, it's fine. I don't think mine are ever quiet. If they're not sleeping, they're squeaky. It's when they go quiet that you should start to be afraid

Out of my five, I've got an adult male, Clint, who walks around nattering to himself all day, and a female pup, Willow, who snores. When they're awake its a cacophony of degu squeaks, squeals, chitters and chatters - all perfectly normal. As bouncy says, its when they're quiet you worry. It can take a while to get used to degu language, and although you'll never understand what they're saying, you will get to know what they mean.

Definitely a cacophony. Mine squeaks to warn me but I have no clue what they're warning me about. Usually, I just come in and look at them and they stop squeaking.
At one point, I think they got scared of the trash collection truck noise. Then there are the random kids with loud music passing by and so on.
I think they got used to the "SQUEAK SQUEAK" and me coming all "What's happening now ?" and we stare at each other and we both go back to our daily lives.

Haha Laiyah, I used to check on mine when they did a really plaintive alarm call, and just sort of play along going 'I know, right, it's terrible' show an expression of concern and bemusement and then go back to my daily life. I mean if we had a mineshaft I would definitely have checked for dogs/children/degus stuck down it.
