I have a degu that gave birth to 3 babies yesterday and two today. It has gone by like 7 hour since the last was born. And one baby was laying on its side and slowly breathing and i was worried that he was chocking or something happened to him. And his belly was red and he was chubbier than the others. So im wondering is he tired or sleeping or he/she is dying.

Welcome to the forum. It's hard to say what's going on, but I think you need to contact a degu experienced vet ASAP. How are the other pups and mum doing? Was this the last pup to be born? Please take a look at our list of vets if you don't already have one, deguworld.proboards.com/thread/15521/vet-guide but I do think this pup needs veterinary care. Please keep us posted

Hello Laudas! Welcome to the forum. I'm sorry for the worry and distress you are experiencing right now. How is the pup, and all the pups and mum as well, doing now? What is the age of your new mother?
It wouldn't hurt to take mum and all the pups in, just to make sure that mum is fully delivered of all pups, or that no one is stuck in the birth canal. And to have all the pups together and with mum means they can nurse and no one is left out in the cold.

Well all of the pups are crawling out of the nest and having fun and the mother is pretty relaxed and now of writing there are 3 pups outside the nest. The age of the mum is about 5months or 6.

Excellent news!
Is dad still in with them or is mum on her own with the pups?

It sounds like the pups are happy, healthy, and causing chaos! Just make sure mum has extra food and that none of the pups are away for too long - they can't regulate body temperature very well and could get cold!
Pics please!

Has the dad been separated? The mum is currently super fertile and at risk of becoming pregnant again, which wouldn't be good for her health.

I'm glad everyone is doing so well! That's wonderful! As you have notice, degu pups are very mobile very quickly. So, a few things you need to potentially do . . . make sure that they are unable to walk through the bars of the cage. The easiest way to do that is to attach some cardboard to the outside of the cage from the bottom of each level to at least 6-8 cm up. This will prevent them from getting out of the cage and getting lost, or stepped on, or scooped up by another pet such as a dog or cat. Pups are born escape artists, and will seize every moment they can to get out and explore. Next, you need check the pups out to make sure they aren't chilled if they are wandering around in the cage, outside of the nesting area. They are unable to self regulate their body temperatures, and so need ambient or shared heat to help them keep warm enough. If you touch/pick up a pup that is chilly/cool to the touch, warm it with your hands and then put it back in the nest and cover it with some substrate. OR you can tuck it inside your shirt or sleeve if your hands are cool. OR chase momma into the nest with the pups. They will begin to self regulate about the fourth week and on. Round about the time when Momma will be weaning them. Momma can used extra calories while she is nursing the pups. Don't be shy about giving her seeds and extra foods. As well . . . because degus are such social animals, they have a lot of colony behavior and manners to learn, so they need to be with her up until they are at least 6 or even 7 weeks of age. Pups that are separated from their mom too early do not socialize well with other degus, and it can be much more difficult during the adolescent months. By the 7th week, you need to separate all male pups from all females. Because believe it or not . . . they can procreate as young as 8 weeks of age. I learned this the hard way. Lastly, if you plan to keep them all, should they all be female, cage size matters. Large cages with length and depth rather than height for climbing are excellent, and help a LOT with colony relationships and stability. A cage that is too small, that does not allow for running, hiding, or solitude when desired, will promote conflict and anxiety. We have a cage size recommendation . . . deguworld.proboards.com/thread/9396/forums-cage-size-recommendations . . . if you are interested. Enjoy your pups! They are fun and full of character!
