My adult degus are normally quite bonded, but lately they've been acting rather strange towards each other. I recently had to move Alberta and Charlie to a new location. (Normally, I have them in a large cage in my classroom but have to move them to my home during the summer when they turn off the air at school. They are in the same cage where Alberta had her pups earlier this year.
Usually they are quite friendly to each other, sleeping in a pile and grooming each other. Dad has been making amorous advances lately, tail wagging up a storm, but Mom immediately rebuffs him and if he continues to "beg" she will screech at him and chase him around the cage and jump at him, screeching, any time he comes too close. Then not 5 minutes later, SHE is over trying to "kiss and make up" by cheeping and grooming him. Later on DAD will be screeching at Mom and chasing her away, and (you guessed it) he'll be trying to "make up" a little bit later.
They are not really fighting...I haven't seen them biting at one another...they mostly just screech and chase. It's driving me crazy though 'cause I have run and check every time they start up to make sure they aren't killing each other. They baby girls, who are in cages nearby, just stop and stare until the squabble ends.
Anyone had any experience with a bonded pair getting "cranky" with each other? Hopefully, this is a phase because I really don't want to separate these two.
