I have had my degu for 7 months and today she has started making whimpering noises, it sounds like the noise that degus make when they are fighting but a bit quieter. She has been making the noise constantly for the past hour, as well as making the noise she isnt being active. I had seen her an hour before and she started making these noises and she seemed completely fine. Has anybody else experienced this? Thankyou in advance.

Hello Chloe and welcome to the forum.
Does she trust you enough to hold her in the cup of your hands? I'm wondering if you could have a listen to her breathing by holding her right up to your ear and listening as well as can be done in the chest area.

Yes, she is very friendly and comfortable with me, a few months ago she was making a rattling noise with her breathing and we took her to the vets and we was given medication to help her breathing, this helped for a few months and then yesterday she started with light rattling but then all this morning she was fine and made no noise. I went to see her again a few hours later and she was making wheezing noises (that sounds like fighting degus) and I held her to my ear to listen for rattling but there was none but the wheezing can be heard from a couple of metres away from the cage

If she already has a history of a respiratory infection, than the potential that this is one as well is strong. I would take her to your vet asap! The sooner you can have it seen to, the better it is for her.
Is she your only degu?

I've just been out for an hour and have just come home and listened to her breathing and she has stopped making the noise, I will keep a Close eye on her and take her to the vets if it starts again. And I have 3 degus thankyou so much for your response

Sometimes degus are sensitive to the type of substrate that is used. May I ask what you are using, or if you have noticed any correlation so her noisy breathing sounds and the substrate?

Just throwing a curve ball - what substrate and bedding do you have in your cage, and when did you last do a clean out?
