Hello everyone! Our 2-3 year-old degu, Frida, after many months wondering what was going on with her, has been diagnosed with elodontoma after having been observed trough x-ray. Frida suffers for many months from respiratory problems and right now she is also bloated. At the moment, we are following our vet's instructions: we give her Lefax (ovol) and critical care every four hours, which she ingests happily We were told to wait until Monday and then we will talk about performing surgery to remove the roots of the molar teeth which are growing in the nasal cavity . So, guys , I would like to ask if any of you has gone through this with his/her degu. Any information, tips and personal experience are very much appreciated <3 Thank you and have a beautiful Thursday

Hi Juhas! I have a Degu going through some dental issues also, it's very common unfortunately - but It sounds like you have everything under control and Frida is in good hands! Someone with a bit more advice will be along soon to talk in more detail no doubt good luck Frida ❤️ they're tough little furballs aren't they?

Welcome to the forum, juhas.
Very sad to read about Frida's issue with elodontoma. She is so young.
I have had many degus who have suffered from the same – roots growing into their nasal cavity. My vet does not recommend and would not even try to remove the roots. Degus' jaws and bone structure is so delicate that the surgery, if successful, is likely to cause great pain and suffering. Also, the risk of death from anesthetic is greatly increased because of the resulting respiratory issues and overall poor state of health.
Is the bloating a result of her swallowing too much air? The Ovol and Critical Care will help a lot. Also, Metacam will help ease any inflammation in the nasal cavity and relieve her pain, and Baytril can help if she is suffering from an infection caused by the piercing of the nasal cavity by the root. Is she currently on Metacam? Has she been given a round of Baytril recently? Has she a history of molar spurs?
If she is not on Metacam (pain killer/anti-inflammatory), I would ask the vet to prescribe it immediately.

Thank both of you for your answers Yes, yasmine, the bloating was caused because of mouth-breathing, she hasn't been prescribed any of the medicines you mentioned Very sadly, since yesterday afternoon, Frida refuses to eat the critical care and to drink the ovol. I think the situation has drastically worsened, she looks so different and barely recognises my touch I shall have a talk with the vet today and see what we should do ... I am crying my eyes out... My poor sweet baby

Metacam might really help her live a good quality of life for a bit longer - ine of my lads was diagnosed with elodontoma (and then no longer diagnosed by a different vet but that's a long story) and first thing they did was prescribe pain meds as it's so obviously painful for them to have their roots growing downwards. The metacam also works as an anti-inflammatory so it has two uses over other pain meds.
I hope Frida perks up enough to eat something! Have you tried ground nuts or vegetable baby food (no added sugars or salt) to see if she can be tempted?

Today she was really weak and had no appetite but she licked twice the critical care food. I am going with her to the vet and I already asked her to prepare some metacam. I will keep you guys posted about the situation it is being a really difficult day for all of us and I really appreciate your help 💜 Big hug!

Good luck at the vets. It's possible to give quite large doses of metacam and things like tramadol or vetergesic are also options. I hope the vet can help you make any difficult decision.

Good luck Frida. My boy had roots growing down but they don't seem to have gotten any worse in 6 months so there is hope in managing it. Also I don't give him metacam everyday and he is eating all the time, I'm not sure if the roots give him pain because I don't see signs of it - so even though he has had a molar removed, has an abnormal incisor, and over grown roots in his jaw, he is still behaving like a completely normal goo so there is much hope for her.
I keep metacam and critical care on hand though incase I notice any change but fingers crossed for all the goos out there with these blasted dental issues!
Incidentally, I wonder if our tap water has anything to do with it? Hormones and fluoride and god knows what else in it, my boys have only ever had filtered water and Tibbs overgrowth has slowed down so I was wondering if that was related?
Could be a long shot but I remember reading that men could start growing moobs because of female hormones being flushed away everyday and that fish were being affected so I don't give to any of my creatures anymore 🙈

Wishing you and your girl all the best. Ask the vet for a vitamin injection, if she isn't eating enough it will give her a boost and help to keep her body/gut functioning.

Hoping for the best for you! I also have a Frida in my group. She's the scaredy-cat of the bunch. The last one to come out for play pen time and will growl and squeak at us as she begrudgingly accepts a treat.
From one Frida to another, hopefully she can be happy and comfortable.

Hi everyone Thank you all for the beautiful words, wishes and for keeping us in your thoughts Unfortunately, Frida couldn't make it any longer She passed away last night, peacefully and at home, with her papa, mama and her soul sister Brindis. Tears are running down my cheeks while I write the message... I had never gone through the loss of a degu and It is as painful as I imagined it ... Rest in peace my little one, you fought bravely and I will always be proud of you and love you

I'm so sorry I didn't see this in time, and that Freida didn't make it.
As others have said, it is comparatively common. Caught early enough and managed, the goo in question can make it to a good age. One of my adopted monsters suffers with roots through the cavities. The biggest telltale sign is his running nose, which occasionally provides a chuckle when he's eating seeds and they end up stuck there. His eating of dandelion roots gives me a clear indication of whether a trim is required.
He's on long-term management, and still lives a very full life. In terms of treatment he has a daily dose of 0.1ml dog metacam, quarterly spur removals, additional high calorie foods to boost his weight, and I introduced a uv lamp for all six. He takes great offence at critical care and, despite warning a veterinary nurse, will happily spit out any that makes it into his mouth. He's such a character! One of my friends was giving his metacam for a couple of days, and was really worried it would go to the wrong one. Instead, she found that calling his name and showing the syringe brings him running!
