We noticed today that Mater was limping. On closer inspection the bottom half of his left hind leg appears to be just dead. The joint is uncomfortable for him but he has no feeling in the toes at all. Obviously we will get him to the vet on Monday or Tuesday (long story but no chance until then), but is there anything else we can do to help him until then?

I would try and get him to rest maybe.

What makes you say it seems dead? No response when you touch it at all?
The main thing is that everything is in the right position and that the blood flow is not compromised. Is he using it at all, does it appear to move as it should?
I can only suggest metacam and heatpad until you get him vet checked. Make sure he can eat OK if he is using a front leg for balance, they can struggle to handle food with only one front leg free.

That's scary! Sounds like an injury to the joint that may be interfering with the nerves and possibly the flow of blood. Is the foot cold?

The foot is cold and there's no response to a squeeze of the toes. It looks a little bent to one side too. His knee is swollen on one side and he's holding it up but he seems to get about OK on just three legs. I feel like a horrible degu mum, I have no idea what's happened!!

Is there no way you could get him to the vet tonight or tomorrow? If it is dislocated or something like that restricting the blood flow, then you could be looking at an amputation by Monday, whereas if it could be put back into the right place today, it might be fine. I'm sorry if that sounds a bit scary, but restricted blood flow/ nerves is the one time when leg injuries need urgent treatment.

The vet is a 45 minute drive away and we have no transport until Monday. Would it be worth gently manipulation to see if anything pops back into place? He doesn't seem in any major pain with it and let us move it around easily. The only time he flinched was when I gently squeezed the swollen knee.

Success!!!!! We gently moved it around, got a small pop sound from his knee and a squeak and it's all lined up properly again! Will still get him vet checked just to be on the safe side, but at least it looks like it should now. Will try the foot squeeze again later and see if we get any response, fingers crossed. No idea how long it's been out but hopefully not too long and he'll be OK.

Tried the foot pinch again, still cold and no response. He has been using it though so fingers crossed it will come back.

Tried the foot again this morning and it's still unresponsive. The leg is all lined up and the swelling has started to go down a little. He's using it to sit on but just seems to drag it around when he's moving about so not sure what else I can do to help. Poor fella. Definitely a vet visit in order.

I fear it may have been out of joint too long, and could have impaired the flow of blood, which would not be good. I'm glad you are going to be taking him to the vet. I really do hope it will turn about though, before Monday.

Sorry to hear it is still unresponsive. It agree it could be that it was dislocated for too long, or it could be that nerves or blood vessels are still nipped. Can you get him to the vet tomorrow?
