Iris is on metacam due to having a swollen foot from fighting. Her dose is 0.25ml once a day of 1.5mg/ml oral dog suspension. Doseage was worked out by rat doseage for a 270g rat which is what Iris weighs as they don't have goo formulas, does this seem right?

Not sure. My vet prescribes Metacam oral suspension for cats which is .5 mg/mL strength. I am to give one drop once every 24 hours, but I am not certain what the volume of one drop is. I will be medicating two of my degus tonight; if no one has answered your question by then, I will try and measure the size of the drop.

I think the drop is about 0.3-0.5 ml – very difficult to measure because it is so little. Seems like it is less than what you were prescribed. Hopefully you will get a second response soon because I am not sure of my numbers. You can also check out this thread: deguworld.proboards.com/thread/20047/metacam-dosing

What you have been given is beyond the normal dose for an injury, it's way up around the highest dose that Bouncy's Scaredygoo has been given by an exotics specialist. I would just do one drop of dog strength and see how you get on, you don't want to overmedicate an injury like that because it can encourage them to use the foot rather than rest it which is usually better for a quicker recovery. titchycatnipsandwich Do you have a book value for metacam?

we do one small drop of metacam on oats and then scatter a few to make a small ball.

Unfortunately not, because the vets in my area are very tight-fisted about sharing their resources whether it's a legal thing, not sure. What I have got is: 1 anaecdotal- Zoe is on 0.1mL BD of 1.5mg/mL, he currently weighs ~200g and we're using a higher dose to try and keep him eating. When River last needed metacam, he was 250g and needed 0.13mL daily. 2. www.ema.europa.eu/docs/en_GB/document_library/EPAR_-_Product_Information/veterinary/000033/WC500065777.pdfIt's dense, and it doesn't cover critters, but they reckon 0.05mg/kg for cats. I'll talk to my friend in Germany, who is a vet, and see if she has anything.

OK, that's the lowest dose, so you can go up if you need to, but as I said, watch for her not resting it.
Thanks titchy.
Just for completeness, I'll mention here that degutopia states dose of 0.1 mg/kg once a day.

Will do though it's looking a look better now so will probably only keep her on it for another couple of days then see how she is without it.
