Eyes are very clear today. Not much moisture on upper cheeks either. Has a chunkier appearance I think, will force weigh her tomorrow as she doesn't like the Salter machine at all, something about it bothers her! The shininess maybe!? Baytil 2/3 dose delivered as usual, rest on cheeks/face/nose. She doesn't technically have any infection to treat as that wasn't the reason behind her teeth being loose so it's preventative because of open wounds where teeth missing, important even so. Usual food... some shredded wheat attempted as something different, but still not happy eating hard food. I'm not sure exactly which teeth are missing. I think 2 from left lower and 1 from right lower so pretty awkward! Been in her cage quite a bit more than the past few days rather than sleeping exclusively in her radiator spot so that's good. Not got many good pics lately with her hiding away. Winter is coming..... Attachments:

Dammit she's so fast now, plumped up little thing, hard to catch her for her meds. Complaining and ranting the whole time before and after.

Haha take it as a victory! If she ate the shredded wheat you could always try putting the baytril on there and seeing if she'll take it. My lad turned his nose up at everything else I tried to trick him with but he never turned down antibiotic-dosed shredded wheat.

She's not a fan of stuff she has to chew since Monday so I have to burrito her for meds. Today she can only have had 0.1 ml of Baytril instead of the 0.2 she was prescribed... hope it will do the job. Hate to see her develop an infection because of lack of success over full baytril dose these past few days. I can't really put it in a paste because if it's a small amount she'll smell it and ignore it, if it's a large paste, she'll only eat a portion of it and so her dose will be super low.

Honestly? If there was no abscess to start with I think the chances are low with tooth extraction. The immune system is well adapted to handle most things so as long as you get most of it in her and she keeps improving, you should be okay! Edit - 0.1ml is a pretty standard dose of baytril too

0.2ml of baytril is a really big dose. 0.1ml twice a day is what most of us are given, but even that is double the book value, so even 0.05ml twice a day should be ample for infection prevention. And once a day is quite often prescribed so should be often enough if that means you only have to burrito her once a day. I think I'm trying to say she will be getting enough for it to work, so don't worry!

Thanks very much for the reassurances all.
I was very lucky she never got an infection in her mouth because she used to bleed from her tongue every so often with the crazy teeth... all the blood would come down her arms - super sad.
I think the way the teeth were loosened (mechanically levered by her chewing on them) means they still plugged the "gaps" and prevented major infection. Maybe I'm talking nonsense though.

Poked her in the eye with baytril now during her struggling! She gets stronger every day so the struggling and crying more and more vigorous. Getting baytril in the eyeball was NOT popular either and involved much angry shaking of the head. Sod this I'll put it in her critical care - she eats about 2/3rds of a medium portion so that'll have to do!
Uncooperative little floof.

Thanks for everyone's kind words - I owe her life to these boards anyway because I learnt so much about caring for a degu in her state in a very short amount of time and everything about her recovery was timed to perfection with knowledgeable advice. I can't think back over anything I regret since Wednesday 18th which is so unusual in these situations and I owe it to you all! Pretty sure she's getting bigger every day too!
