Hi everyone,
I'm a recent degu owner, and unfortunately this has to be my first post! We rescued 4 degus, one group of 3, and 1 who is separate, for now. We're working on reintroducing them, since the SPCA received the 4 of them together, but one of them was getting some cuts and scrapes, so they put him in a separate cage.
Anyway, the solo degu, Athos is his name, has had an infection on one of his fingers for the last couple of days. We've since been putting topical antibiotics on his finger and keeping a close eye on the infection and his behaviour. He seems to be doing okay, though this morning, after one of the 3 degus downstairs (we have the degus separated horizontally as recommended) started barking, Athos starting his own series of vocalizations. One of them sounds like a groan, or maybe a a chirp? He also makes a lower, softer, more tremulous sound. I would almost say it is warbly, but it does NOT sound like the warble audio on the sound guide.
I have reviewed the degu sound guide, but I still find it quite difficult to identify the specific vocalizations they are using.
Here are a couple of sound clips I captured with my phone:

www.dropbox.com/s/5bd0ao50f942fnt/Degu2.wav?dl=0
The first is a longer sequence from him, with some amplifications.
The second is an amplified subsection of clip 1, containing two versions of the unknown sound that doesn't sound like anything in the guide, to me. Each of these has two repeats, but he would also tremulo for four or five repetitions as well.
Partly I ask this out of pure curiosity, but I am also concerned for Athos' health, so if anyone has any thoughts or insights, they would be very much appreciated. Thanks!
