Hi everyone,
One of my boy goo's is very poorly. :-( he is currently lying on his side and cant really move except to twitch. I think I need to get him put down. Anyone know what is wrong with him and how much it costs to get a goo put to sleep? I feel so sad about him :-( I just don't want him to be in pain any more :-(

It sounds like his time has come. Could you just make sure he's snuggled in somewhere he feels comfortable, and perhaps he will pass on his own shortly? it is late at night for you, yes? (I'm in the USA, so I can't give other advice, sorry). Poor little guy.

I am really sorry to hear this, Loki was helped to go to sleep last night in exactly the same situation. Not knowing what was wrong but that he was in pain the Vet intervened to end any suffering.
Its a really hard and very personal decision, I did not think we would make it to the vets in time and we have with 2 other degus stayed at home at the end. Bee and Diego snuggled up under my partners beards and went to sleep, they were warm and safe at home. Loki was at the Vets but I could not see him suffer a drawn out demise, the nurse who cuddled him at the end was a wonderful woman.

Oh i am sorry. Is there an emergency vet available near you? Most areas have a 24hr vet nearby, but it can cost a lot. I have had degus make a good recovery after being very close to death, so it might be worth trying. If you can get him to see a vet it may help you come to a more informed decision. How old is he? Has he been ill recently? A heat pad may help him be more comfortable, but make sure he doesn't overheat.
Costs vary depending on the vet, but it's cheaper if you want to bring him home to bury him, or if you don't want to keep the ashes. The vet should be able to discuss the cost when you make the appointment so it's not such a shock at the end.

Oh no.  The only thing that could be wrong with him and that I know is possibly curable is if he is bloated. If you have any Ovol (Simethicone Emulsion that is given to babies when they have gas) or if you can get it at the pharmacy/drug store it may be worth the effort to give him a drop of that and see if that helps. This is a medical emergency; the best thing is to get him to the vet. The vet can possibly feel for bloat (an X-ray could verify this) or find out if it is something else. Not sure what it would cost to put him to sleep in the UK. It is quite expensive here in Canada (gas should be given first and then the final needle). I hope it does not come down to that. It could be anything, do get him to the vet as soon as you can, a consultation usually costs £12 to 30. A proper PTS with gas followed by injection cost me £21 I think, and the same procedure on a Saturday night by the emergency vet cost £70.

Thanks for your advice everyone. I have lived in hope today that he would pick up but he hasn't so I'll be taking him to the vet tomorrow :-( in other shock news, one of my chins has died really unexpectedly tonight and I am slightly heartbroken :-( he was a dwarf chin and only young so I'm really sad and shocked. :-(

With one dying and one being ill so close together, it may be worth checking out the environment. I remember one guy who discovered a CO leak because of his small animals dying young and unexpectedly. Check for anything they could be chewing or inhaling that could do them harm, especially things we wouldn't necessarily be aware of.

Will do. Thanks. The rest of them are well (at the moment) but will keep my eye out and I'll have a look around. The goos are all getting to their twilight years now being at least 6 years old but the chins are young so it's defo a concern. :-(
