I'm normally really careful with my meds, but I dropped one the other day and couldn't find it anywhere. Unfortunately Stu has found it and had a bit of a nibble before we could get it off him. It's amisulparide, an antipsychotic, and I'm not sure what to do. He seems sleepy and unresponsive to noise but responds well to touch and has eaten and drunk. Do I call an emergency vet or just let him sleep it off and see how he's doing later/in the morning.

Isn't charcoal supposed to help push it through digestive system if you catch it early enough? Don't know whether that works for degus mind you but I know it's used with other animals?

Just had a quick look on the meds at what it does and possible side effects and personally I would take to vets especially if not moving and not responding or maybe at least give them a call for advice

It's likely too late for the charcoal now too anyway x

Given the vet a ring. He said based on how much he had, it shouldn't do him any permanent damage. We have to keep offering food and plenty of water to flush his system and he should be fine by the morning. If he's still lethargic or unresponsive we need to take him in. Unfortunately if he has consumed enough to poison himself there's very little they can do so just got to keep our fingers crossed that a couple of Nibbles is not enough to cause serious harm. I am a moron!!

oh dear, poor Stu. Am sure he'll be fine, but understand your worry. My youngest dropped & lost one of his methylphenidate tablets the other day, have been watching the dogs constantly. Accidents do happen sometimes, don't be too harsh on yourself hun. Fingers crossed he's up & around after a nap.

Fingers crossed he didn't actually swallow very much. It looks like it's the heart that that drug may affect, not really sure how you would monitor that though. Has it been long since he nibbled the drug?

I think you could check if he gets too hot as this seems to go along with the fast heart rate by what I could see on the side effects. Yes don't crucify yourself, it happens to many, my daughter found some old tablets I had forgotten about from before I had her in a bathroom drawer and she decided to eat a lot of them, I had to rush her to A&E as it was T3 which also effects the heart but she was okay in the end. I felt awful too.

After about 5 hours of stress and offering him food and water every 30 minutes or so, he has got up and wandered over to the herbs all by himself. He still seems a bit lethargic but at least he's moving about and eating on his own. Just going to wait for him to have a drink by himself and fingers crossed we should be in the clear. I just feel so stupid.

Please don't beat yourself up hun, little critters and their teeth means they could have helped themselves to something much worse that you wouldn't have known about. There's nothing you can do about it because it's just in their nature. You saw what they'd taken, and you contacted the vet to find out what to do. To be honest, I'd think you'd have seen negative signs related to a fatal dose by now. Him moving around and eating is good. He's probably just extremely chilled. Goo spliffs! Keep us posted!

Stu is much better this morning, thankfully. He's almost back to normal, just a little slow. He's been eating and drinking over night all be it with very little enthusiasm. I will definitely be keeping a closer eye on my meds from now on, little monster, scaring me like that.

So glad he is doing better! What a scare! My son once got into my meds, and we spent a terribly frightening 5-6 hours in emerge with him. They had to give him this giant cup of charcoal to drink, and he HAD to drink it. They put chocolate syrup in to try and make it better, but they had such limited success with that method that they had little hope of it helping. So, I was imagining the battle to come, as I gave it to my son. This would be our first clue just how powerful his love of chocolate is . . . he slurped that massive cup down and asked for "mo peas, mo!!" (He was three at the time.) The fight over the heart monitoring equipment, well, that more than made up for the ease of drinking the charcoal, ROLF!! LOTS of very chalky and black poop later, he was given a clean bill of health.
