Took Ichi in to the vet today because on Saturday I noticed that she could not open sunflower seeds with her mouth and that, what she could eat, she ate very slowly.
She had a spur from her left bottom molar growing over her tongue and another minor spur from a top right molar. Dr Auger removed them both.
Ichi will be 5-years old tomorrow along with her remaining sisters – Ni and Shi.
(Siblling San passed away a few days after birth, Sister Go passed away from an abdominal tumor and brother Roku passed away from what is believed to have been heart issues. Father Sean passed away from a molar spur piercing upward through his tongue, and Mother Lilac passed away just short of age 8 from molar roots that grew downward passed her jawline causing continuous infections that eventually destroyed her bottom lip area. She also had molar roots growing into her nasal passages but these were very slow growing and manageable.)

I'm glad you spotted the difficulty, especially before there was a prolonged opportunity for weight loss and therefore decline in health. I think you are developing and extra sharp eye and sensitivity to the tiniest clues.
How is Rei doing?

Rei is stable. One more week of antibiotics to go. She's looking good but still makes coughing noises after eating. I am still feeding her a mix of PC Organic Baby Food (Root Vegetables and Spinach) and Critical Care. Both Rei and Jin love it. Ichi, on the other hand, won't touch the baby food. Tried to feed her the Metacam in a mix of ground up sunflower seeds and pellets and water to make little degu treats. She ate it without the Metacam; after adding Metacam, she took two licks and now won't go near it.

I hope she recovers well. Spurs are something I usually have in the back of my mind because Finn rubs his teeth a lot. He isn't drooling or having any difficulties eating, so I hope it's just a thing he does because he feels like it.

Ichi now is having some sort of issue with her left ear. She is visibly irritated by it and every minute or so brings it in close to her head, tilts her head downward and scratches at it. Ear infection? Or is she going the way Makoto did? Maybe I need to bring her back to the vet to check for an ear infection. I will see how she is tomorrow morning. I hope she recovers well. Spurs are something I usually have in the back of my mind because Finn rubs his teeth a lot. He isn't drooling or having any difficulties eating, so I hope it's just a thing he does because he feels like it. If you ever notice that Finn stops eating his favorite treats or starts eating them very slowly, then bring him in to have his molars checked. Otherwise, it could just be a thing he does.

Ichi's ear is no longer bothering her. She still is not eating normally but she will eat oats and pea flakes so at least she has an appetite. Not too worried about it yet – it sometimes takes a few days after dental work for a goo's mouth to stop hurting.

Ichi is still unable to chew the shell off of sunflower seeds. I doubt she is eating her regular food so I am feeding her sunflower seeds without the shell and Critical Care mixed with PC Root Vegetable baby food (she likes it so now I have three degus eating the mixture – it's a lifesaver. I mix it up and then put a couple of teaspoons full on a small plate and they gobble it up). I am also continuing with the Metacam – if she has not improved by next weekend, then I will be taking her in to the vet on Monday for a re-check.

This is a bit puzzling. I take it Dr Auger didn't mention any wounds in the mouth? And I don't think he allows you to have a follow up phone consultation, does he?

He said that there were no wounds in the mouth. Troubling development this morning — Ichi seems to be bleeding from her nose/mouth area. It is not a lot of blood – just a bit caked on around her nostrils and lip area. I can't get an appointment with the vet today but have one for tomorrow. Other than the blood, she is acting as usual.

Another concern: Last night when I had them out and about, I notice that Ichi is walking oddly - something strange about how she moves her rear legs. And now I just noticed fresh red pee in the cage. (Might be from one of the others though – they have red flowers in their plant mix.)

Oh dear, seems like there is something else going on that may or may not be related to the anaesthesia, I wonder if it increases the chance of a stroke, or if the procedure could expose her to more risk of a sinus infection or I don't know, I hope it's something temporary. Good luck today at the vets.

Took her back to the vet today and, lo and behold, she has a spur growing up from way up top a right molar that was digging into her cheek. That explains a lot. Dr. Auger removed it and the hope is she will be back to normal in a few days. Will be keeping her on Metacam until then. So relieved. I am hoping that the weirdness of her walk is due to weakness (from not eating enough). We will see.

The more I look at how Scaredygoo moves the front of his body, I wonder how much of it may be attributed to to his molar roots.

So glad they found the cause Was it just awkward to see, and that is why they missed it the first time?

I think that's the case. He said it was tucked in up high. Oh dear, seems like there is something else going on that may or may not be related to the anaesthesia, I wonder if it increases the chance of a stroke..... I am now beginning to see signs that indicate that she may have had a small stroke. She sort of slides down the ramps and when she runs the wheel it isn't for long and not very straight. She is also sort of falling off things. Does kind of remind me of how Makoto was. Also, I told the vet about her having an issue with her left ear the day after the first dental work and that I have noticed her again scratching that ear. But this spur that was just removed was on the right side – it is a bit puzzling. Makoto had had trouble with one ear as well. Will keep an eye on her. There's still the hope that her awkwardness is due to weakness or possibly the Metacam. If it is a stroke, then maybe she will recover; Makoto is doing very well and, despite being practically blind, he no longer stumbles about and does not fall off the ramps, and he is excellent at running his wheel (knock on wood).
