Yes, it does eventually become an open wound but even before that the area becomes inflamed and infected. Treating with Baytril helps it heal and prevents infection during the process; Metacam helps manage the inflammation and the pain. There comes a point when the area can't heal anymore and that is when it is hopeless.

I'm sorry to hear this. You must be feeling really sad, I feel sad and she's not mine, I hope you soon feel able to dust yourself off and carry on with the great care.

Oh that's awful! Im so sorry and hope it doesn't come to this. I have read the growth can sometimes be manageable and that in some cases stop growing? So hopefully this happens for both of us. I have a boy with a a lumpy lower jaw and X-rays will soon show the extent. I'm as worried as you are 😔

Oh Yasmin, sending you lots of hugs! As Scaredygoo is in a similar position, I really do feel for you. I'm convinced that she has the best owner possible x

I have a boy with a a lumpy lower jaw and X-rays will soon show the extent. I'm as worried as you are 😔 I am very sorry to hear that your boy has a similar issue. Fortunately, it can progress very slowly and I do believe that the growth can be managed. My degu Lilac went on for a year and a half with both roots in the nasal cavity and roots downward in her lower jaw before the latter got the best of her (she was almost 8 years old by that time). It was a fair bit of work because she required special feeding and both Metacam and Baytril, but it was a pleasure taking care of her – each day was worth it. Please keep us posted on how your degu is doing. I have learned a lot dealing with Lilac's situation – and now Rei's – so if you have any questions/require any tips, etc., I should be able to help.

Thank you all for your support and kind words.
I feel for you too, bouncy, and for Scaredygoo. All we can do is keep them as comfortable as possible and enjoy each moment we have with them.

Rei started drooling a couple of days ago and yesterday she could not eat - not even baby food. Took her to the vet this aft. He removed one big spur growing under her tongue and a second smaller one. I hope she will be able to eat again soon.
Poor girl - the roots growing into her nasal cavity are causing her to sneeze a lot. 😟

Hugs and ear scritches for Rei if she'll sit still for them. It sounds like she's had a good run with not ^too^ many problems for a few months, and hopefully after this spurs removal she'll have another good number of months before the next time...

yasmin Mr grey and Al both have molar roots growing below the jaw line they haven't got any symptoms of roots growing into the nasal cavity yet but the vet could defiantly feel bottom jaw growth. I'm keeping a very close eye on them as I imagine the same will happen with the nasal cavity at some point too xx

It makes me very sad for Mr Grey and Al and for you too. It is very difficult dealing with this. All one can hope for is that the roots grow very, very slowly (not at all would be best but...). That said, it is good news that your guys aren't showing any signs of the roots growing upward into the nasal cavity. At least they can breath easily. How is their eating?
Rei's condition is deteriorating. She is having so much trouble eating and is very skinny despite daily multiple soft food feedings and Metacam. Her face looks all puffy and her eyes look small. She coughs after she eats and sometimes food comes out of her nose. Fortunately, she still eats on her own so I don't have to syringe feed her. She prefers to eat her mush (Critical Care with baby food or ground almond, cooked/mashed sweet potato, etc.) directly from a spoon so I indulge her (hmmmm, so that is why my arm and shoulder hurt). And she is still running her wheel, I am glad to report.

I'm sorry to hear she is deteriorating. At least for now you have strong indications that she wants to carry on with her wanting to eat for herself and still running on her wheel.

Yes, as long as she is running her wheel, I will not say goodbye to her. Unfortunately though one of her eyes is now half-closed and there is a white discharge. I have started her on antibiotics in case it is just a case of an infected molar root (though I fear that a root may be penetrating her eye socket ).

Tibbs gets this squinty left eye with a white cloudy discharge too now and again. I take this as a sign that the top left root is causing discomfort and give him some loxicom on his oats. Almost immediately the eye is wide and bright and clear again but I still can not be sure what really causes it as it's so very sporadic.
Thinking of you and little Rei x

Taking Rei to the vet tomorrow. For the past week she looks all swollen. Her whole body looks puffy. I continue to give her Ovol in case it is bloat - but it doesn't look like bloat and it is constant. She has been eating well all along; however the past two days she has been ravenous. Begs for food (she can only eat soft food) then eats it all. Then begs for more. I am concerned that she has a stomach issue - blockage? Tumour? Twisted? She is very active - hyperactive.
