It's great that she's still eating and drinking When you say stable, does this mean that the antibiotics don't appear to be doing much? Fingers crossed for Dr Auger on Monday x

I think the antibiotics might have helped a bit – she seems to bo whimpering less and her breathing seems less labored (however, that could be because the Ovol worked in clearing air out of her gut). But she is still coughing and makes squeaking noises when she coughs, and I think she is still mouth breathing. As well she continues to selectively eat and today it looks as though she has some wetness around her mouth though that might be just antibiotic - can't always get it all into her mouth.

Saw Dr. Auger. He took a look at her mouth. That's where the problem is – she has a massive infection in one of her upper right molars. The infection is causing inflammation all the way into her nasal cavity and that is why she makes those odd noises when exhaling (I thought she was coughing). We are to continue giving her Baytril twice a day for the next three weeks to fight the infection and Metacam once a day to reduce the inflammation thereby also aiding in combatting the infection. Lungs are clear, heart is good, no more air in gastro-intestinal system. Better news than molar roots invading her nasal cavities, eh. And I have just seen her eating a food pellet!

Although she's in pain, this has to be one of the best possible outcomes! Go Rei! She's following the namesake she acquired, and is using the force

Rei has completed her antibiotic treatment but is still coughing. I think that there are probably molar roots growing into her nasal cavities. Other than the coughing though, she is active and happy. I will continue with the Metacam but maybe every second day (depending on the coughing) and I will continue feeding her Root Vegetable Baby Food mixed in with Critical Care because she loves it and I am not sure if she is eating any of her regular food.

I wonder if she might need regular antibiotics if there are roots where there shouldn't be. Might also be worth trying higher doses of metacam, given the success Bouncy and I think Uglibug have had with 3 drops a day (or more).
If the baby food continues to be useful long term, it might be worth thinking about adding a liquid calcium supplement and/or a multivitamin supplement to just balance it up a bit. (my girls have been eating a less than optimum diet with them being so unsettled, less forage and pellets and more grains and veg, so I have been giving them the odd drop of vetark bsp multivit, and vetark zolcal-d liquid calcium & vit D)

One drop seems to help so far. Not sure about giving any more antibiotics except as needed for fear of it causing gut issues. I probably should get an x-ray done to confirm the molar roots issue. Thanks for the tip on the vitamin supplements. I will definitely look into what might be available here in Canada.

How is her breathing? Do you think it might be teeth or has the infection recurred since the antibiotics stopped?

Thank you deguconvert.
moletteuk – her breathing seems okay. She doesn't seem to be in pain and she is eating normally – so, not sure if it is a reinfection of the molar or something else. Guess I will have to take her back in to the vet next week.
Update: I did take her in to the vet. At this time, the molar was doing fine - no infection. Rest of the teeth looked fine too. Prescribed continuation of Metacam – giving it to her for several days in a row and then stopping and seeing how long the snuffling is held at bay.

Update on Rei — I took her to see Dr. Auger today because she started drooling a lot on the weekend. He saw that she had spurs that needed to be removed; I decided to have an x-ray done as well since she would have to be under anesthesia any way. She had spurs removed including two on either side that were growing towards her tongue. X-rays showed how messed up her roots are. As expected, she has molar roots growing upward into her nasal cavities – accounting for her snuffling. However, she also has a root growing downwards that is about to push out under her jawline. I am now completely resigned to accepting that palliative care is all that can be done for her . She will continue to get Metacam and, when the root does punch out from the lower jawline, I will have to begin giving her Baytril as well (just like what I had to do for Lilac). Fortunately, Rei enjoys lapping up Critical Care (mixed in with baby food) so giving her the Metacam isn't a struggle. The Baytril, however, may be more difficult to administer - won't worry about that now.

Oh no I'm so sorry Yasmin. I didn't even know that they punch through the jawline! Then what happens? Is it an open wound?
