Hello all, please can anyone give me some advice. I have 3 degu which have had respiratory issues on and off since I had them. My poor little bob has a problem now, I have been to the vet and have been giving him baytril for the last week but he seems to have got worse. He seems to be mouth breathing and I've just noticed that he's bloating. I'm in a bit of a panic as will not be able to get back to the vet until tomorrow evening. Is this life threatening? (I had a rabbit die of it once) is there anything I can do to help? Have been putting bowls of olbas in the room and also they have a dust free environment.

Is like to help but I have no experience in this, some one with experience will.be along soon to give you some helpful advice, I'd personally sat go back to the vets asap. I think there is a medicine you can give to degus that's for babies to help ease wind.

You need Olbas Oil. If you can create a steam bath of sorts in your bathroom, to help moisturize his passageways, put a few drops of Olbas Oil in the hot water, and let your sick degu rest/walk around in the room for a while. If you can be in there with him, it will likely help him to not become terribly stressed. You need to be in there for several minutes, I would say 15-30. If you can do this twice daily, it can really help.

My vet prescribed a drop of Ovol (infant antiflatulent drops – simuthicone) when my degu, Makoto, suffered bloating from eating too many clover leaves.
In Canada you can buy Ovol at any pharmacy/drug store. One drop on a piece of food – I've put it on a piece of puffed rice – should help assuming the bloating is caused by too much air in the gut.
Bloating can be life threatening.

We created a steam bath for Elliott by dropping him in his carry case, and having the steam in an adjacent cup and then draping a towel over both the cup and the cage, it definitely seems to ease his breathing before it became a more serious issue.

Thank you for all your replys, I had been using olabas steam bowls in the room. I'm sorry to say though that despite my best efforts I lost poor little Bob.
