Last night, 4-year old male degu Yuu stopped being his usual, crazy active self. He just sat all fluffed up in his (and half-brother Roku's) nest, and wouldn't come out even for treats. I coaxed him to move, which he did, and tried feeding him but he would only take one sunflower seed, and then he went back to the nest. It was the same this morning. I have noticed dark urine around the cage. I thought it might just be because I am feeding them a dried vegetation/flower mix that has alot of dark and orange colour to it. Now I am suddenly worried that it might be something more serious. I have made an appointment for Yuu with Dr. Auger for Monday afternoon.

I think you need to have frequent traveler discounts. You poor loving mum! I hope he is OK!

I think he is dying.!!!! He tries to move but can barely drag himself around – his back legs are so weak, he keeps tipping over on his side. He is cold to the touch; I have put a fleece around him. He squeaks now and then. I don't know what to do.

Yuu is sitting up a bit. He took some water from a syringe. My husband tried to give him a drop of Ovol in case the problem is bloat.

Poor you, and poor goos!
Try and keep him warm, a heat pad if you have one or just cuddle him in a fleece or even inside a shirt. Offer water and some calorie rich foods, like pieces of nut, if he won't take hard food try mushing some up for him. I definitly think a trip to the vet asap.

Oh no! Has the warmth from the fleece helped? I'm so sorry you're having to go through this.

He is unresponsive and cold. I am holding him against me, trying to warm him up - he just lies there, limp.

I am so sorry! I hope he gets better, but if not, I know he knows you love him.

You're doing all the right things. Just keep trying to raise his temperature and keep him calm and safe. If he will take a treat or some water, go for it but if he's too cold he will be shutting down so he may not be interested. Try something he normally goes crazy for. We're all hoping for the best for you both. X
