Hi, I've recently adopted a Degu called Garfunkel. He was just coming out of his shell and exploring and being mischievous when he jumped onto the edge of the third floor mezzanine and dropped down into kitchen onto the marble floor!!! My two Staffies then chased him but did not harm him when he froze behind a bin. I'm so worried! He is moving and walking/hopping normally but once I got him back into his cage he seemed as though he didn't recognise it?
He also squeaked for around 5 minutes. Short intermittent squeaks. Broke my heart!
How can I tell if he is in pain or has any internal injuries? I read that they have a high pain threshold. I don't know what to do at this point as he's not showing any difficulty moving etc.
Someone please advise, I've only had him 4 days so I'm not completely confident that I know what his usual self is yet.

He probably had been in some shock, which would be normal especially after such a high fall AND being chased and frightened by two Staffies, so being frozen, or very lethargic, would be expected. Keep an eye on him, the shock can disguise any injuries, as well as his need to not display any weakness that could be observed by potential predators, ie your two chasing Staffies. Evidence of injuries may be very difficult to see, so it might even be a really good idea to have your vet look him over, just to be sure of what his condition actually is. The squeaks you have heard are probably resultant of his fear.

Sillygoo did something similar, stepping off the mezzanine onto my porcelain kitchen floor. When he landed, there was a comic moment of all four legs splayed as he landed, which seemed to absorb the impact. Give him a few hours to get over the shock, then have a good look.

Thanks Guys. I couldn't sleep all night and phoned 4 different vets for advice. Ended up taking him to a specialist and they were in complete shock how he came out of a 12ft drop unscathed! He's a little iron man!! They also took a wee sample to test for glucose which came back clear so I'm sooooo relieved. He's just a little overweight so I'm cutting down on his treats..Poor Garf, he's had a tough week.
On the plus side, the extra weight and padding may have cushioned his fall! Haha
