Hi i am a little puzzled as to what the pink discharge could be that seems to be coming from my degu's back end. I have had him for about 3/4 weeks, after getting him from the RSPCA as companion for my 6 year old degu, whose brother died, leaving him by himself. We do not know how old the new degu is, though I think he must be older than a year, as he is quite large and doesn't look like a younger degu. Today was the second day they spent together in the same part of the cage, after being introduced slowly to each other. There has been no fighting and they seem happy together, but this evening i noticed what looks like a pink, fleshy, sticky discharge, coming from his bottom to the side of his tail. he does not like being picked up or touched, so it is hard to see exactly where it is coming from. I thought it might be a baby at first!! any ideas would be grately appeciated, thank you

I will get it checked out, I just wondered if anyone might know what it could be. There doesn't seem to be any blood on the degu or on the cage. It's very strange. My step sister made a joke about it looking like he's got a tiny chicken fillet hanging off his bottom! But no joke, that's actually what it looks like! But he seems happy in himself, eating and drinking etc and it doesn't seem to be bothering him. I'll see how it goes, but any experience/advice is greatly appreciated Thank you ?

Is this coming from a normal area of skin, rather than one of his openings? If so, I can only think that it is a wound, maybe a puncture would from a bite or an accident on something in the cage. If there is flesh hanging out then he needs to see a vet to get it sorted out and will probably need antibiotics. Keep a close eye out for infection because this area will be difficult to keep clean so there will be a stronger risk of infection.

If it's pinkish and there's a flap of skin, it sounds like it could be a weeping wound, which is the body trying to heal itself. Best to try and catch him in a tube and make certain. If the area feels hot, it can be a sign of infection.

Another possibility could be a rectum prolapse .... Where part of his rectum has came out (fleshy piece) and is being damaged by sitting on, licking etc and causing the discharge.

I hope you have been in touch with your Vet? If not, I think you need to ASAP.

Hi I'm sorry I haven't replied, thank you so much for all your concern. I am happy to say that Toastie is fine. Whatever it was seems to have disappeared and he has a clean bill of health He is so happy and active that he got into a fight with my older degu over the wheel, when I put them in for the first time together with it. They both love it so much that they got really aggressive as to who's turn it was. So they have had to be separated again whilst Cheese recovers from a gash across his neck, and a wounded eye! poor little bear He has seen the vet and been put on antibiotics and eye drops and seems to be responding well. But they can still see each other and are making happy noises to each other, so when he is better, we will try again. It's a shame because they were doing so well, but I'm sure we'll get there, it'll just take time Thank you again for all your messages, I just didn't realise they were there, as the notifications weren't coming through to my email. Please don't think that I don't love my degus! they are my babies and the most important things in the world to me! I'm not sure how I do a signature, but my babies are all boys, Cheese and his brother Marmite (rainbow bridge, bless his soul) both 6 years old and Toastie, slightly younger, my new little man

So glad to hear that he is doing well, but sorry about the fight over the wheel. Is your cage large enough to host two wheels for the boys?

Good to know Toastie recovered Extra space and doubling everything up can really help when they want to be together but tend to squabble over their favourite things.

Hi, My degus have a really big cage so it can take two wheels. I have bought two new ones. Any tips on how to reintroduce them with the new wheels? They clearly want to be together (in a good way), as they are destroying all the objects around the hole between them to try and get through! Cheese's injury is almost cleared up now. His eye looks totally better and the cut on his neck has healed nicely. So I think after the weekend, I would like to start reintroducing if I can. Thank you
