So I have a new degu; she's a rescue. I've noticed when she was outside her cage that she's missing two nails on her top right paw, so I checked and saw that her bottom nail is hanging off by a thread. She doesn't seem to have trouble walking or anything, but I don't want to risk her damaging it more. I can't go to the vets right now, I don't have the money to get it done there, so I considered removing it myself. Now would this be safe?

I would leave it. If it is bothering her, I think she will remove it herself. Metal mesh wheels can promote injuries like that, as well as potential injuries to the tail, or to leg if they get caught. Personally, none of the degus I have had were ever injured through the use of these wheels, infact they were the only ones they would accept, but if you have one like this, and she is losing nails, perhaps you might want to think of making a change.

I think I would expect her to sort it out herself too, does it look better today? Do look around the cage to see if you can see what has happened.
