Not sure which forum to place this in. I have degus and rats. I am in the process of setting up the play area. My question is, do I have to have different tunnels, hideys, etc. for the rats separate from the degus? Or can they share equipment? I have two groups of degus which I will not be letting out together to play. Can they use the same play equipment?
Thanks,

Both animals have a good sense of smell. Whilst out of the cage, it could be considered neutral territory. Toys, though? You might encounter problems, and it might make for a very nervous time out of the cage. You could wash everything between plays, but then the goos might disapprove? Hope you find a solution.

I would try them with the same stuff and see how you get on, I would clean up any toilet mess carefully between species. Something that springs to mind is that mites or infection could be spread more quickly, but if they are in the same room anyway maybe it doesn't make that much difference.

Have you experienced one species being afraid of another when they smell them in the same area? I guess I thought that being in the same room would take care of it, but I wasn't really thinking urine marking which is bound to happen. There are some differences anyway in that the degus will probably chew more and I wouldn't want them chewing some of the items I might put in with the rats.
