Sounds a little like dominance fighting over the new territory. It is difficult to say if it will calm or escalate, as it really depends on your degus and their personalities. Nat . . . what are the ages of your degus? If they are approaching the 6 month age, you are also likely seeing the rather intense adolescent into adult stage where hormones and dominance issues rage pretty high. I think for degus, the ages between 6 - 18 months must be their prime mating age, particularly in the wild, and that instinct is very strong. So . . . if your goos are in that age range, you are likely seeing both and I hate to say it but things may get much worse before they get better.
I haven't reread through the full thread here, so can you tell me what the surface area of your cage is?

Yes!! Very normal, chewing, missing nose fur, the whole kit-n-kaboodle. Sometimes it is due to wanting more space, if they feel the cage is smallish. Sometimes they just really want to get out of the cage and have a roam. Sometimes they LOVE the . . . taste, sound, feel? . . . of chewing on the bars. Some, and I know there are members here that will totally vote for this "reason", just really love to drive their humans nuts!! Solving or discouraging this kind of behavior is not very, perhaps I should say, seldom easy. You could park heavy or fixed items in front of the area that she likes to chew on, especially if it is always in the same place. However, if she can move them, she will, or she will just find a new "favorite" spot and start all over. Or she might just train you to take her out for a romp every time she chews, but I suspect that would not be a very . . . enjoyable . . . thing after a time. Or, and this has been employed a lot, turn up your music, TV, or whatever (shut a door if that applies) helps drown her out. LOL! You have our empathy!!

I should add, it is usually a somewhat temporary thing and often burns out over time. Errr . . . maybe. Ours did LOTS of this on and off, and one had a particular metal "toy" that she loved to bat around. LOTS of noise, but she would tire of it after about 20 mins and stop for a few hours. It was mostly cute.

You have my sympathy. Our Stu is an attention seeking "pinger" and he can keep it up for over 30 minutes if he's of a mind to. Ignoring it seems to have helped a bit, he doesn't do it at night so much any more but if one of us is in the room....... lol

No need to worry exactly, have you checked it turns ok and is big enough? If they haven't had a wheel before it can take a little while for them to figure it out.
You need to host pics on a site like photobucket or flickr and then post the 'img' tag link - just copy the bottom html code in the stack on photobucket and paste it into your reply on here. There's a video in our pic area demonstrating.
