Hi, Im fairly new to degus, as i normally deal with rescued rodents such as rats and gerbils, but there have been so many degus in despereate situations ( due to unexpected pregnancies, and owners not knowing how to sex, and pet shops and books giving false information), that this year alone, i have had to find homes for over 60 degus, and more recently, as there are not really anymore places for further degus to go, I have just been sexing degus for owners who dont know how and are having unwanted litters. The latest family, who I saw last night, are saying that the only room they have to now house their large family of degus is in the bird aviary. So, I am wondering who knows whether this is a healthy option, as i thought that degus were not good in drafts? Can anyone advise me, so i can pass the info on, whether keeping degus in cages an aviary is an ok option. Many thanks, F, UK

Firstly, degus natural enimies are birds and they may (I think they would definately) get stressed out. They are not supposed to be in a draft because they can become very cold, very fast or very hot very fast. I'm not sure that this would be the best idea...

I have to agree. Degus dont cope well in drafts. what birds would be sharing the aviary? if they are only budgies, then i think that they would get used to this. Please PM me about the problem in general, I'd like to discuss it further as you live in the UK
