Hi, we have 3 male degu, two of which are brothers. They all get along fine, apart from at meal times when things get fighty. Eddie, one of the brothers, has always had cataracts in his left eye but my boyfriend let them out and pointed out that his right eye looked like this (picture attatched) and eddie's face was swollen around his right eye too. Any advice would be appreciated.

Personally I would go to the vets and get it checked out. But there are many more knowledgeable people than me on here. Good luck.

I can't get a good enough image on my phone to see the eye properly but if there's swelling it's best to get him to the vets as he'll need some anti-inflammatories and a good check-up.

Definitely vet ASAP. It could be an infection behind the eye, possibly caused by a wound or a problem in the sinuses - could be dental related so make sure they give him a thorough check over. Have a think about whether he has any other symptoms that could be related to dental issues too.
Have you tried many different things to get them to eat peacefully away from each other?

Thanks for the replies . We've got a vets appointment for him, earliest one we could get is next Wednesday though :/. He doesn't seem to be in any pain and he's as lively as ever.... I'm just gonna make sure everywhere is clean and keep an eye on him. They each have their own bowl now so we're feeding them separately.

If it deteriorates at all then I would try and get an emergency appointment, vets are usually quite accomodating if you explain how worried you are, or maybe another practice could fit you in sooner, I know that's not ideal if you have a relationship with this vet.

The bathroom tile idea sounds interesting, I may have to look into that. We've found a way to settle them down with it now, we just have to watch them really closely when we feed them. His eye doesn't seem to be any worse, it's not weeping and I think the swelling has gone down a bit.

Well the vet has said it looks like he's either got some hay stuck in there or caught it on something. He said he's not gonna have much sight in that eye anymore and if the worst comes to the worst, it'll have to be removed.... Fingers crossed it won't come to that though. He's given me some drops to put in over the next week which I'm sure Eddie is gonna be thrilled about!

Very glad it has been looked at. I am sorry about the loss of vision, and truly hope he will not lose the eye. I hope he takes the drops OK for you!

Thank you yeah it's a shame :/ he seems okay though, he's very lively and he isn't bumping into things. He doesn't like the drops but I think they're helping. When we brought him home and put him back in his cage, he ran up to the other two, dived in the middle of them and started chirping. It was as if he was saying "you'll never guess what they've just done to me!"

Yeah, he was definitely telling them that his mummy had been mean to him!
