Hi everyone long time since i posted here. I'll get right down to business tho.I took hombre to the vet because he was drooling quite bad. They put him under to trim his back teeth he also lost weight from 212g to 176g. Its been a week finished metacam about 2-3 days ago. Brought him into the vet for a check up because he was still drooling was hoping that it was a side effect from the metacam numbing his mouth but thats not the case. He has gained more weight back to 190ish. I have another follow up on thursday and if his weight has dropped the vet told me that they are uncomfortable doing another trim and that i would have to take a trip up to saskatoon from regina ( about 2 1/2 hour drive one way) to see a specialist and get some teeth pulled. But now hes squinting one eye and i was reading in another fourm on here that could be a back tooth growing into his head and im really worried as he is only 2yrs old and a bundle of joy. Right now his eye is open but its on and off. Hes quiet cuddly right now which normally means something is wrong.he has also been sneezing quite a bit. hes very tame and i would hate to see him go.
What I'm really trying to get at is if god forbid i have to take this trip what tips do you have for that long of a car ride? I dont want to stress him out really bad.
Also anyone ever have this issue before?
Sorry if anything is mis spelled or badly written as im on my phone.
Much love from Ryan and Hombre

It does sound like it could be an overgrown root, but it'll require an xray to find out for sure. It might be worth asking your current vet if they would be willing to do the xray if not the dental work to avoid a long trip to the vets as it will be very stressful for him. I'm going to have to take my boys on a 2.5-3 hour car journey in the future but my plans are to give them as large a travel cage as possible, hidey holes (fabric, nothing too heavy incase they move around on the journey), hay, herbs and water and I'd probably take a towel with me to put over and see if that calms them down as I have a travel-squeaker which could get annoying after a few hours straight

The few times I've taken hombre to the vet he seems to love the car ride i normally would put a towel over him if its cold out but if its nice ill take the towel off for the ride back and he nust adores the sun light

I am currnetly going through the same thing with one of mine, Nutmeg was taken in a couple of months ago and had her spurs removed, she has never really seemed better since, the drooling seems to come and go, but the last couple of days her one eye has closed up so she is in again tomorrow for an xray. She is still as active as ever, and seems to be eating but has lost a bit of weight (which is worrying because she is a small degu anyway).

Update on hombre -at 235am i had hombre out running around noticed his right eye was more closed than normal -he then either 1 puked 2 had a discharge from his nose 3 drank his own urine - i wiped his face and on the tissue was yellow fluid with black speckles - he had his teeth trimmed at about a week and a half ago finished metacam about 4 days ago - i called the 24 vet but the vet on has no experience with degus so taking him in wouldn't help at all - have a vet appointment thursday but will call tomorrow morning to see if i can bring him in any sooner - worst case i drive the 2 1/2 hours to the vet university and get him looked at and operated on he is still very active almost more than normal
Would like to wait till thursday as to give my work more notice and get an xray done and an appointment made at the University
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Nutmeg saw the vets today and whilst she is fine in herself, they are concerned about the eye and the wet fur around her face. She is back in on Wednesday for an X-ray and dental check again. Got some drops to give her for today and tomorrow. They think it may be a root or an abscess in connection with the root. I have only ever seen milky whit discharge from the eye, nothing yellow

If you see that discharge, or whatever it is, wipe if off and then seal the tissue in a plastic baggy and give it to your vet. Perhaps they can have a look at it and test it?

If you see that discharge, or whatever it is, wipe if off and then seal the tissue in a plastic baggy and give it to your vet. Perhaps they can have a look at it and test it? FIrst thing that comes to mind is that he might be suffering from an infection and that the yellow fluid is pus. He probably needs an antibiotic right away. I'd call your regular vet ASAP; they should be able to dispense it without you having to take him in. An x-ray will require sedation. Not sure if it is needed at this point but should certainly be done before driving all the way to Saskatoon. Also, my vet says that extracting molars/teeth from degus is not likely to end up with positive results because their jaws are so tiny and would be damaged by the process putting the animal in even more pain/suffering. Wishing Hombre all the best. Please keep us posted. Saddlers: Wishing Nutmeg all the best as well.

Hombre is wet around the mouth with a squinting right eye again his symptoms seem to only show at night. Im happy that his appointment is at 750pm the vet will be able to see this. Everytime I've taken him hes looked completely fine. Still worried about him hopefully the vet can do something

No xrays vet told me that when they had him under they trimmed two teeth and had to wake him up because they didn't like the way he was breathing. So they sent me with antibiotics called baytril 0.07 ml to give him every 24 hours and they sent a referral to the college in saskatoon. The college should call me by noon if i dont get call i call them. Hopefully go there thursday morning get an estimate and find out what can be done. Vet told me they might be able to fix it but if not then i can manage it for a couple months to a year before putting him down. I don't want to think like that but if its untreatable then i will manage it until he shows signs of suffering. He's still very active. Send your prayers please and i will update daily

Sorry to hear you have not yet got this fully resolved, I am going to start a separate thread for Nutmeg because I didn't want to hijack your thread. I hope it gets sorted soon, keep us updated.

Its fine. Im off to saskatoon early thursday morning appointment at 1030am. The vet here didn't want to do an xray as they would do one in saskatoon. Saskatoon vet told me on the phone that they would rather do a ct scan and find out if its infection of his teeth or something else. Ill keep updating as it goes on
