SO i have started my MSc behaviour units and have decided to pair up learning lots of new concepts with practical implementaion of degu training. My lot have had a very easy ride the past few years and trained the hoomans to give treats on demand and to be late for work due to refusal to go back to bed.
i will let you know how progress / lack of goes, we started today with relearning our names. so far so good !

loki is still coming the top of the class :-) weve releart kiss which was an old trick of his. THe OH is getting suspicious of all the behaviour modification books and how this may extend to him....

LOL! Do you need to help him relearn "kiss" too? I wonder if you could train a husband to "clean the loo" on command? Although, I think I would like, "take me out for a romantic weekend" on command better. If you have any successes with , please do tell us how you did it! ;-)

lol - its really logical but has overly complicated formal names, extinction, operant and reinforcers. Basically ignore negative behaviours (coz I am not doing any aversive stimuli on the goos/ oh perhaps...) and reward immediately when they get it right. Both parties have caught on fast in my household.
I've ground up some high value nuts and oats to make a super treat. I basically rattle the treat box and the goos come straight to the table to train. we train about 30 minutes after they have come out for a play so that they have burnt off some energy and always at the table, so they pair this location with 'work'.
Loki surprised me yesterday, he is a little bit autistic (this is my work specialism and I am adamant he is on the degu spectrum) he has never climbed on us and refuses to be handled, yesterday he climbed on my leg and up onto my shoulder to watch tv. I was pretty chuffed.
with the romantic meal, set em up for success! the logic would be, book a night out your self and throughout the meal (for example) keep repeating how this is great, time together etc. reinforce with the OH chosen 'reward' beer etc. Then after refer back to the positives, out of the setting - at home a week later... you would hope they then catch on......

ROFL!!! Hmmm . . . doesn't drink beer or other alcohol, but LOVES chocolate covered raisins/peanuts/almonds . . . so if I fill a plastic tub with those and shake them to get his attention, and then give him one every time he does something I want . . .

Lol I need a boyfriend that is good with working with wood so he could build me some jumps and a seesaw for my degus . I want to them to have agility equipment!! They know there tricks too well but I'm not getting anywhere with the more complicated ones (I think I need to pick up a clicker and clicker train them to get the proper timing).

hmmm clicker that's an idea. ive used that with canine training and some absolutely thrive. I'm not sure how you would make it relevantto a goo, perhaps pairing with a treat too? to start? we have a music box for loki plays bramms lullaby and he loves that

You would be able to use a clicker in the exact same way as canine training .... Pair the click with a treat so the click noise means"good" and then the click becomes the "treat" that indicates the exact behaviour you want ..... A click means a treat is coming.
I'm just lazy and haven't got one yet .... I think that will be my goal when I'm off for two weeks at Christmas.

sorry I reread this and realised the daftness of my response - must have been tired (Night shifts!).
I was struggling to pair degu clicker training with the dog work, mainly as I am struggling to find a degu treat that is small enough to keep them engaged in what we are doing and high value enough to tempt them in. Sorry brain frazzle!

Our degus all go crazy for brazil nuts . . . Cut them up into tiny slivers and you have a LOT of tidbits they will do anything for.
