Hiya all I'm new
I have (had) two female degus from pets at home. They shared a cage in store and seemed very happy.
Elsa was very inquisitive where as Anna was timid. But we soon worked out that Anna was the boss.
Elsa was very happy to be held and always jumping up in the cage to see us. We left them 2 days before trying to handle them. And first started with a bit of food (degu nuggets) in our hand to get them use to us.
Elsa quickly warmed to us and Anna would take food from us but didn't like to be handled.
We have had them since mid august and they did squeal and squeak a lot. Anna would always dominate the sand bath the food the water bottle. Elsa only got a look in once Annawas done.
LLast night before hubby and me went to bed the girls were in their wheel and seemed quiet. I'd checked food and water all were fine they had their bath the day before. So off hubby and I went to bed.
In the early hours of this morning the girls could be heard squeeking and squealing quite a bit. But they do this often so in my half asleep I paid no attention to it.
This morning once the kids were at school I noticed both girls were hiding in their house and were very quiet.
I noticed the water bottle was low so opened the cage to get it and Anna came bounding out of the house but Elsa was nowhere.
I move the house and found Elsa was buried and a bit of blood around the saw dust. She was obviously dead. So I removed her and sorted the water for Anna.
Anna has not seemed bother. But upon closer inspection iv noticed elsas front right paw hasbeen totally removed where it joins her body (maybe at the elbow type joint) its bent at an awkward angle and there is only 3 bones lleft on the lower part of the limb no "meat" at all.
Is it possible for a degu to turn carnivorous? Could Elsa have been injured maybe and done it to herself?
They do have a wheel but it has 4 holes on thefront to climb into it and when aAnna runs she picks up a lot of speed and has thrown Elsa out the way a few times with it.
Iv not seen blood or anything else anywhere just where I found Elsa's body buried under the hay and saw dust in their house
I'm really devistated and my kids will be too because Elsa was the one who liked to be held Anna flat out refuses.
