In their cage, they have a piece of pine that runs the length of the cage at the top. It is like a perch.
They like sleeping on it but they some time fall off and hit the ground. They are always okay, I have taken the stick out but that didn't go over well.
Is there a reason why, they do this. I know they sleep and live in burrows in the wild but my two like to be high up.
Thank taz13TEXT

I have recently read that domestic degus are still very close to wild degus, so the behaviour you see in you pets is very close to how they would act in the wild. I have noticed that someone in any degu group tries to be on guard, to keep the rest of the family safe. So it may be that your degus sleep up high so that they have a good vantage point to see everything that is going on. And if you dont have a large group of degus, they stay together, so the other joins the degu on guard!

Hello taz13,
our degus sometimes like to have a good view when they sleep, too. ;D When you have a cage of a certain hights, it can be a good thing to put an old cotton kitchen towel or t-shirt in the middle of the cage (or in the danger zone) like a hammock. Instead of having a long drop and probably hitting some hard edge, they fall into the towel.
It did good work in our cage and they sometimes even used it to sleep in it.

You can buy what are known as Ferret hammocks, these come with necessary attachments for the cage and are quite long lasting while being made from fabric. I would try that.
