Hi I am currently giving my rabbit cheeky lots of sage to try and counteract her constant milk production. I would like to gather information on any plant based remedies you may have tried and whether they were worked or not.

This is a really interesting topic, but not something I know much about. It's also interesting because degus have high tolerances for many plant compounds which can have harmful effects in other animals, so presumably this means that medicinal type compounds may not have the same effect on them either. Davx or Maravilla might have some experience, and Davx's Degupedia website and forum might be of interest to you if you can cope with Google translate (or speak German). www.degupedia.de/wiki/index.php/Hauptseite

The only herbal remedies I've tried and used personally with the degus are Bach flow essences - specially rescue remedy, beech and walnut. They worked very well for recovering and reintegration after fights.

They worked very well for recovering and reintegration after fights. I'm jealous. I bought the beech Bach essence to help my goos so I could get them back together sooner. They refused to drink the water. I know they don't tend to drink much anyway, and the bottles have been a lot more full anyway since Trinity left (she seemed to drink an awful lot...) but they wouldn't drink anything. The minute clean, un-Bach'd water went in the bottles and hung back up, they were drinking it like normal. I only used a drop, in a reasonably large sized bottle, so I wouldn't have thought they could have tasted it, but... Who knows?

Are they back together now or are you still having problems? The cages are down side by side now, they're squeaking through the mesh at each other. Lots of noise at the moment, but it seems to vary. River seems to get on fine with Zoe, it's Nyota who is fighting with River at the moment if they're in the same space. I let Zoe into River's cage for half an hour this evening, so River wasn't all alone, but the squeaking and grumbling has worsened so I'm thinking that it possibly wasn't a good idea and I shouldn't do that again...

If I put a calming (in theory) mix of herbs/flowers together will you test it out for me?

PM me your address and I will put some in the post and we can see if there is any change in them. Will do, especially as River's just bitten me again... I'm glad she's feeling well enough to do that, but when all I'm trying to do is work out whether the changes in her his coat are from where she was scratched or if she's losing fur... I groomed a little clump off her his whiskers while we were playing, figured a more thorough check was needed. Want me to start them as soon as they arrive, or once River's ABx have finished? (Also, do degu bites get infected as easily as cat bites?)

(Also, do degu bites get infected as easily as cat bites?) No start them straight away most herbal remedies (in people) need regular use and time to work. So I would say give them all some twice a day and just note down for me how they are behaving and whether you notice any changes we can review it after a week and see if it helps. Even if it doesn't they will enjoy the treats! As for your bites I have no idea have only been bitten once but I was fine. Writing this am looking at a lovely rabbit bite mark on my hand, I have a very unhappy bunny at the mo who is having an abcess squeezed daily!

It will be interesting to monitor a few combinations to see if they help or not. I'm so lucky with Teddy and Max they get on so well they have an argument now and again but nothing as bad as you guys, but then they have sorted out who is boss aka Teddy!

No degus are herbivores so there is less problemtic bacteria in their mouths. That said their bites do go deep, take forever to heal and hurt that nothing else!
