Q2) They are about the size of a rat, most often a little bit smaller. Q3) It is best to have a metal bottom. It is easier to clean than the glass (to my understanding) and the degus can't chew through it. They LIVE to chew! Those are the only two questions I can answer. Q1) I can say this, if you want an animal that has waking and sleeping hours similar to yourself, the degu is best, since Chinchilla's are nocturnal and therefore will be sleeping throughout the day time hours. I don't know how degus and chins compare for social behaviors. There are several owners on this site though that can give you good comparisons, as they own both kinds of animals.

degus are by far the most friendly animals. the chins although they are covered in wonderful fur are not really that cuddly and just love to run around.
my goos are very tame and will run all over you. he he.
my chins wake up about 8.00/9.00 much to the annoyance of my daughter cause she wants them up so she can see them before bed time.
if you only have room for one kind i would probably have goos..

Hi to everyone. I got my two ladies from the rescue centre on Sunday and they are absolutely great. So placid. One is more shy than the other but I am sure she will come round eventually. They are both handleable but prefer no to be.When I have fed treats by hand the less shy will always take the first treat to her pal and gives it to her then comes back for her own.Amazing.I find this forum something special and I visit all sections daily. I also have a great advisor for my questions who is full of knowledge and wisdom. On visiting each section I can either laugh (at photos and videos) or be in tears when reading of a Degu in poor health or having passed away. This is truly a Forum for all Degu owners and should be used constantly. Thanks Meg.

Hello all, Rache from Fuzzbutt.co.uk checking in. Some of you may already know me as purveyor of Fabulous Funky cage furniture for Rats, Chins etc etc. Here to keep an eye on you all and to learn a bit more about what your Fuzzers like to snuggle up in. Most of my life is spent chained to my sewing machine and dealing with orders but I will try to lurk and post as much as I can, however I'm a member of about a Gazillion other Furry Forums, I need a clone of myself just to keep up with them all for me When I am not a slave to my sewing machine I run around in Stormtrooper armour and I am also a Ghostbuster - www.tk2441.co.uk - Who ya gonna call???

This is my first time on this website and I'm not certain where to start. I have two male degus, about a year old. They get on well together but one of them is developing a bare patch at the back of his neck. I don't see that it could have rubbed off in any way. Has anyone else come across this please?

Hello and welcome to the site! This is a very helpful forum and most questions can be answered here, or at the least advice given.
The bare patch is most likely due to his companion over grooming him. Sometimes this is a result of having too much time with the sand bath on hand, and reducing their access to it can help reduce the over grooming. Sometimes it has to do more with the degu doing the grooming and their relationship/bond with each other. If it is due to their bond, well . . . there isn't much that can be done. Unless you have also noticed a greater than usual amount of itching and scratching. If there is, have your vet look at them for mites.
Take comfort! Over grooming is fairly normal, and isn't a sign of trouble.

Q1) I can say this, if you want an animal that has waking and sleeping hours similar to yourself, the degu is best, since Chinchilla's are nocturnal and therefore will be sleeping throughout the day time hours. i read both on here and wikipedia that degus are diurnal (sleeping pattern like ours) but with mine it couldnt be further from the truth. they have 4-hour "days", 2 hours spent active, then 2 hours sleeping. this happens without fail, as i often see them sleep during the day, just as well as i hear/see them very active at 1-4 in the morning. much to my dismay sometimes.

Hi all, I'm new to this forum -- just joined yesterday . I don't have any degus yet, but I do have a rabbit, cockatiel, and some fish. I'm planning on getting a pair of degus very soon. Been researching them the past couple of days. I just need to purchase the cage and other equipment, and set it all up. I have some experience with chinchillas and I'm wondering, how much do degus differ in behaviour from chinchillas? Also, what kind of sleeping places do degus like? I know a lot of chinchillas enjoy those hammocks that I've seen in some online stores.

Welcome, You'll find lots of good ideas and info on this forum. Also check out www.degutopia.co.uk it's a great site. John Hopewell (www.johnhopewell.co.uk) does the best cage stuff and at good prices. I'm not an expert in Chinchillas but a key difference that applies to the cage is that Chins are best kept on a mesh floor while Degu's need a flat surface (otherwise they get sores on their feet). Behaviour wise?.... Degus are active during the day and sleep at night but Chins are the other way around.... Degus love to sleep in all sorts. Nest boxes, hammocks, ledges so long as they can pile on top of each other in a cuddle pile they are happy.........

My name is Marlene, and I am a first time degu's owner. I am looking for more degu's owners in the Halifax-Nova Scotia area (Canada), so we can share experiences and help each other. At the beginning we were looking for guinea pigs for our girls but my husband found out that a family were giving away this little creatures se we decided to give them a chance. has been great so far. Thanks.

First post here. Just wanted to say thanks for the useful advice on the website, and here. We adopted a lone Degu about 2 months ago, and today got a companian for her, and the advice on introducing them was most helpful. Mike
