Hi all My partner decided to bring home three degus, we have had them now for over a year and have called them Lumpy, Cuddles and Smirnoff. Until a week ago they have been fine, then suddenly one morning i woke up to cuddles not very well! So of to the vet i trundled to be given antibiotics and eye drops. Has anyone had as much fun as i have had trying to give the degus the antibiotics? No fingers left as cuddles soon cottoned on to the bittererness and would not take it. Then all of a sudden cuddles stopped eating and i became really worried. So i came online and found this forum which gave me tips on how to get the degus to eat. I sat up all night hand feeding Cuddles ground down food with water. So thank you for a great place to be able to come. Cuddles is now well and doing fine. Thanks again for such a wonderful site meg!

Hello, My name is Tony, and I'm from Connecticut, USA. About 4 weeks ago, a member of my rat forum had posted a need for a home for 5 male degus that had spent the last year in a 10 gal aquarium. Well, my SO and I spent time trying to track down all the info we could before responding that we could take in and possibly foster these boys. Sadly, the net seemed to be seriously lacking in real solid info...But we figured we had enough to at least make a start and give them a better situation than they already had. Last week we met with the young lady that was looking for a home for these guys. Seems that they were in a pet store, and the owner couldn't get his license to sell them, so told her to find homes. One did end up going to a different home. When she met us, she said that the single degu had given birth to pups the night before . Since the 4 we were getting didn't come with their tank, but in an animal shipping container, we didn't get to have a good look until we got home and put them into their temp holding tank while we finished up the main cage. Two looked significantly larger, and, from my research, we figured they were females...and therefore, pregnant. All the degus are about 12 mos old. Needless to say, yesterday we were blessed with the arrival of the first batch...9 lovely degu pups. So glad that this degu was the first to come and take food from our hands, as she placidly walked from the nest to allow us to inspect the babies. (Fortunately, we did not get the post-partum mating serenade from the male that nests with her) And so begins our journey with the degus.

Hi everyone, I'm Jo and just signed up today. I'm the very proud mum (OK, owner) of two beautiful baby (well 14 weeks old now) boys, Bash, because he was so bashful, and Slick, because he's like an oil slick, put him on the floor and he spreads out everywhere, lol. I love the site and hope to make some fellow Degu loving friends. Any advice you can send my way would be greatly appreciated as I want only the best for my babies Take care all and I hope to speak to some of you soon! Jo

Hello all. My name is Jim, I come from Nottingham in the UK and I own a rather funky little degu named Chili! He is approaching 13 months now. Sadly his other half, Pepper, passed away earlier this year. I've used this website quite alot for information and resources - thought I'd give a little back now too!

my name is kate, I am new to this kind of thing, never been in a forum in my life. However, we bought 2 degus, 1 week ago, 2 males and were told they would tame etc. I just wanted any tips from some "experts" please. We are using food, and talking to them all the time, but at the moment they are very skittish and only tentatively approach my hand to take food then run off again. any tips really appreciated. Also, how do I use this forum thing??

hello kate!ha ha u sound like me im crap with computers too :s its fairly easy just workin it out as i go along!! there are LOADS of threads on degu behaviour that might be useful, but it will take time for your degus to trust you but sunflower seeds help with training and they'll get more confident as they get to kno u sounds like ur doin a good job so all will be well in time ;D xx xx

hello Kate x. welcome! you seem to be doing very very well with your goos. they can take a lot of time to become tame but they will, honest. what treats are you tempting them with?
