Yeah, I asked about the edging because if you plan to put substrate on all the other levels, it will help to keep it in the cage, and it will make it harder for the degus to kick it out. Also, having substrate on all levels reduces the build up of odors. If you use edges that are about 12-15 cm tall, it will help keep the mess from flying substrate to a minimum. It makes a huge difference, believe me!

I mentioned it to husband as I started worrying they might just walk off the edge when the doors open so we will be putting an edging on the shelving at some point!!!

Lol finacard is fairly cheap and comes in a massive bale. You can also stick with shavings (buy it online or see what horse supply stores have in). The good thing is your substrate will last a lot longer in a wooden cage as you can just spot clean and do a big clean-out every few weeks or so!

Yes I know :-) ill have a look on line then for a large bail I'm thinking wood shaving will get chucked out the upper levels too easy ?

The ledges you're going to put in should limit the shavings getting chucked out but finacard is a little heavier so it stays in the cage better

Is finacard ok to use yeah? Finacard is fab and absolutely perfect for goos. I've always used it for my gang. There are quite often big bits of cardboard in the bale and my Stan LOVES to carry them up and stuff their sleeping box full of them, hours of entertainment. You can see his little face light up when he finds a big chunk of cardboard. Cage looks fan-dabby-dozy! Good work ;D
