I would say twice a week, most would say once but Degus use the whole of their cage as a bathroom, so it can get pretty messy very quickly. However it does depend on how big your cage is and how many degus you have, a picture would help a lot.

I would say scoop out the soiled shavings every day (or atleast every other day). As for using the whole cage as a bathroom, that varies between degu's. Mine mostly use the top shelf, and usually in one spot. If you're lucky enough to have degu's like that, scoop out the soiled shavings often. NEVER leave it more than two weeks without a full clean. But just look at how much muck there is in the cage, and if you'd like to live among it. If you wouldn't... clean the cage out.

Hi, My degus are in my girls toy room so I have to keep them clean. I give a quick hoover to get poos up every other day - sometimes more as my girls do it aswell, as I have to keep around the cage clean anyway, the floor, don't want my girls treading in poos!. And I do a thorough clean every week. I don't use anything on their shelves, as I have lino on there. In the bottom play areas I use shredded paper, which I only usually clean once a month - cos its really difficult to do!

Hiya, Just wondering, how often do the goo's need cleaning out? I know it varies between animals, which is why i am asking thankyou Hello Silvergerbil Looks like you got some good answers to your question. I would like to add some input into this topic. As was mentioned, the size of the cage and the number of degus housed in it will influence how often cleaning is required. However, the type of cage your degus live in is also a big factor. In wire/mesh cages, the use of bedding or absorbing substrate is impractical since the degus will throw it out of the cage in no time. You often end up with piles of hay, bedding and poo on the floor around the cage. Since there is little bedding to absord the urine, you will find the cage starts to smell after a week. Keeping degus in a metal cage is a full-time cleaning job.In a wooden DIY cage, you cage use lots of bedding and absorbing materials to cover the cage floor and levels, without the degus throwing it all out. These cages stay clean much longer and do not require daily maintenance the way commercially sold metal cages do. If you are interested in a DIY cage, visit the "How to build a degu cage" topic. Hope this helps Jordan

I have a large wooden cage and the best tool I've found for cage cleaning is my small Shop-Vac. First I use my hands to scoop out the majority of the bedding, then use the Shop-Vac for the remaining shavings and poos. It's quick and leaves the cage totally dust-free.
