Hi, can anyone help?
Molly had her litter on Friday, and Millie had hers yesterday, the problem we are having is that both adults are fighting each other, and molly is biting and throwing her own babies about which has resulted in three deaths. But Millie is taking care of her litter like a proud mum. Apart from separating them, we are at a loose end, so any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

Are you in a position to separate the cage down the middle so they can still see/smell each other but then both litters & mum have their 'own' area?
I have no experience of new mums or babies but I would assume that they need splitting up until they are settled with their babies?

The only way we can separate them is to put them on different floors. But the question is how long would you have to keep them apart for and would they intergrate, without fighting again?

Right now I think level separation would be fine, as the mum is looking after the babies I doubt she'll want to be jumping around, she may just want to have some peace!

How many babies does Millie have? Since a degu may have as many as 10 pups, she will have nipples for as many as 10 and would be able to care for a large group. You would have to be very careful to make sure she always has good food and hay on hand though as she will need excellent nutrition. Probably wouldn't hurt to give her 6 sunflower seeds on a daily basis as well just to give her good fat to put toward her milk supply. I think that giving all the pups to her is actually a brilliant idea. Molly is likely to continue causing deaths at this point. I have no idea why there should be aggression between them. It's quite unusual . . . not unheard of, but still unusual.
