I have two male degus who are about 18 months old (Miles and Doug). I am used to seeing them wrestle, fight and mount each other but last night something terrible happened and I don't really know what to do. While I was in the room, miles mounted Doug with his penis out and really went for it. after about 10 seconds of frantic humping, Doug got mad and chased miles around the cage really viciously while he still had his penis out.
I managed so separate them but miles started to bleed a lot from his penis. It looked prolapsed for a while but after an hour in a separate smaller cage it looked a bit better. Doug meanwhile was bleeding a lot from his rectum. When they were running around the cage there was a pool of blood and there were literally blood splatter marks up the walls!
They have both cleaned themselves up since and both seem fine health wise (they are back together now) but they are still trying to hump each other a lot more than normal and are getting more aggressive with it.
Does anyone have any ideas about what might be going on?
Thanks
