Sorry I need a bit of a pep talk. Daisy is not good again, it's the same old problem of inflamed nether regions. I had great advice from chloe at degutopia on how to combat the problem, daisy squats too low when passing water so I've had to substrate the shelves. Thing is the warm weather hasnt helped her either. She's always been a little goo and I'm sure she was the runt of that litter. It just upsets me so much that I cannot stop it happening. I've done everything!!! Vets several times, asked everyone with goo knowledge and I feel utterly powerless. It's come on fast this time, I realised she was a bit hyper which is the first sign of her being uncomfortable. She's been bathed and I'll sort out meds with my vet asap. It's just awful to think she's always going to be prone to this. Pepper never has had this problem. Sorry to be a misery but you know how it is when you can't help, I feel rotten. I had to vent a little, I know you'll all understand. :-(

The poor wee thing, It's hard when you can do nothing to stop a problem happening. You are doing all you can do to help her and I'm sure she knows that too. We always feel guilty but try not be too hard on your self (easier said than done) ?? what about mesh so her pee goes straight down and the not sitting in it as she doing it just a though may be of no help!!!

Thank you for the support! :-) I was very lucky and my vet let me get the medication daisy needs without taking her in. I explained about how warm the car would be and it'd make her worse, they are mercifully understanding. Obviously if it was a first time occurance I'd take her straight in, it's just easier when it's an ongoing issue. Thanks smux for the excellent suggestion. I have left their sand in all day but they tend to dig all the sand out and not use it as a toilet so far. I thought about tissue last time but as you say they will defo pinch it! I couldn't figure out how to fix anything to the shelves that they won't rip up. Daisy seems a lot more cheerful today, she's less manic and looks less swollen. Couple more days she'll be her normal cheeky self again. :-)

This might sound like a truly daft suggestion, but I can't help but think of baby bottoms and how we try to protect them from urine burns, rashes, etc.. I am wondering if you could try a little diaper (nappy?) cream that maybe contains some zinc in it, to see if it will create a barrier between her skin and the wet surfaces? Just a thought.

It's a very good thought DC, not daft, you've previously suggested it and I've tried it a few times now :-) The problem is rubbing it in enough so daisy doesn't lick it! She gets so irritable and wriggley when she's like this it's nigh impossible to keep her still. I can just about bathe her with a cotton bud but I gotta be fast! I think I need the degu equivalent of baby powder.....or a nappy.
