Hi i've just taken in my first 3 Degu. I run a guinea pig rescue but was given these which my husband decided to keep them.
So i need any advice there is on housing ect. At the moment they in a bird cage which is fine for quick fix as got enough room to play ect but if given time they will chew way out.

degutopia.co.uk will probably tell you all you need to know. Also, being a guinea pig rescue, you might have some guinea pig mix in (gerty guinea pig is perfect), and degus are fine eating that just so you know. If you have the mix that contains nuts/sunflower seeds/dried corn you'll need to remove it before feeding it to the degu as they should have these in moderation :-)

Here is another link to a different thread that has good information in a fairly short read. deguworld.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=behaviour&action=display&thread=5337 Kind of a snap shot into degus and things you need to know. A good place to start as well as reading through on Degutopia. Happy reading!! Enjoy your degus! Please feel free to ask any and all questions that you may have. Degus can be kind of weird and will do unexpected things, so NO question is stupid. We've all been there at some point.

thanks. my husband fallen in love with them.
Cage wise what do you need in them? i know that they need the sand bath so got the stuff you use for chinchillas think read that they use it twice a week? not to leave it in s they use it as a litter tray. does that mean they can be litter trained? Also can they eat readigrass i have it for the guinea pigs

Hi i was trying to start a piggie rescue and have five of my own but its not easy to get started so i have had to give up on the idea unless u have any ideas lol. My hubby was the same we now have six degus in two cages so i have decided to give them my dining room for the cages and rescue them too or just take them on if they need good homes. I have leatnt so much about these little guys so you can always message me if you want. mine also love veg ie carrots and brocolli some goos dont like it but give it a try.
