Hiya, I was just wondering, how much hay is too much hay? My degu's seem to eat through an aweful lot of hay, i have a little hay rack from P@H which i fill with hay and it seems that i am re-filling it daily with fresh hay. How can i tell if they are eating too much? Can they eat too much? Is it bad for them to have to much hay? Thankyou x

You can never give them too much hay Hay is the main basis of a Goo's diet and is very important. It's very usual for them to eat lots of hay. Just make sure they are still eating their normal food, as they get other vitamins and etc. from that. You are doing fine by re-filling the hayrack everyday with fresh hay, no need to change it I re-fill my hayrack in my boys cage too, everyday. They love the stuff.

Im jealous. Wish my boys were that good with hay. It's so so good that they are eating that much hay for teeth wear down and gut motility.

-phew- thats a relief! I knew a vast amount of their diet is hay, but i had a horridly sneaky suspicion that the amount they were eating may be too much, because i know sometimes if animals eat too much its bad for them. But thankyou i shall keep letting them be little hay piggies then ! Also, food wise, im feeding them sort of a handful of food in a bowl for each of them, (so 4 degus, 4 handfuls) in the morning and in the evening. They seem to eat all but a few little stragglers of food. Is this a good amount of food for them or do i need more or less? Like, if i filled their bowl up with food, and just let them eat their way through and just top it up, or do i need a specific weighted amount i.e 10grams per degu per day? x

feed wise, they usually have a guide on the bag, I know my pets at home degu nuggets recommend being fed 15-25g per day, but this may vary from feed to feed. As for hay, you can never give too much, degus need it for healthy teeth and gut function, it is very important that they do not run out as it is a staple of their diet.

As a general rule it's 10g per degu per day. Modify it then according to your degus. So, if they are eating too much and getting tubby then reduce the amount to say 8g. As for hay, eating that much is good for the goos. They're digestive system is adapted to a 70% hay diet so just keep on doing what you're doing

Wicked ! Thought i would ask! Thankyou! I went foraging for things for them today, i got some grass, (newly grown), rose petals (freshly stolen from the bush), some parsley, and a couple of blackcurrant leaves. Man that went down a treat. I nearly lost fingers putting that in their bowl ! x
