I am copying this over from the poundland thread because I would like to explore further the potential of growing fresh greens from my seed mix. I had mentioned the other day that I am also growing from the seed mix I am normally feeding my girls. Today I thought it was time for a first taster and it was a great success. I will now grow this in terracotta pots with a wire mesh top so that I can put it into their cage. It takes abut two weeks to grow to a nice size, so I'll have two pots to give this once a week. Fred ! This is fabulous ! They really do seem to enjoy it. The photos you took are wonderful. The idea of growing the greens from a pot and covering it with mesh is not new to me, but I never went through with it. I would like to use some of your photos and post about your latest project on the website. This is a great way to introduce degus to fresh greens and grasses. This is the pot a couple of days later. The girls are nicely clipping the blades and stems. Because the pot is plastic and not covered with mesh, they only have access while out on their balcony. Otherwise it would look quite differently by now. So today I have started a a proper (small scale) trial:

Good idea, looks great! Some years ago I also provided seedling food and my degus loved it. Eventually I have pictures from this event... it was much fun.

When I was a child we used to do something similar for our budgie so I had been considering something like this for my degus. I had thought of a clay pot, either a normal one or the shallow type intended for bulb planting, and mesh over the top. I have seen some copper mesh which has heavier wire than many of the steel meshes. Are they likely to come to any harm from trying to chew copper?

I remade another batch of growing seeds (they wouldn't eat the second bunch until the plant shivelled up and died). Except .... I forgot to take out the sunflower seeds (oops) so I guess the goos get some baby sunflower plants. lol I mixed my seeds (basic cockatiel mix with millets, canaray grass seeds, safflower and sunflower) with seeds for my cats grass (basic oat grass) so all my animals can eat it hehe. Although the cat is not happy when I cut "his grass" and feed it to the goos.

great Idea. I've been thinking about this too. which seeds are in your trial batch? Yellow millet, panicum millet, canary seed, red millet, linseeed, niger, black sunflower, wheat, red dari, and oat. The growing wasn't a great success; I assume it will take a few runs to get it optimised. However, my girls were obviously fascinated by the variety ;D and after 20 minutes
